Creativeworld 2018 Trend Show Tour, Part 3: The Gardener

Welcome to the third and final installment of my series on the Creativeworld 2018 Trend Show! Today, we'll be looking together at the trend identified by the Messe Frankfurt trend consultants as "the gardener".

[Disclosure: Messe Frankfurt and the Creativeworld show are a sponsor of this site.]

Each year, Creativeworld divides their Trend Show display into three themes. We've already looked at this year's other themes - the purist and the colourist. The third style, the gardener, shares some things in common with the first two - and yet could not be more different.

This trend theme is exactly what its name sounds like - natural, organic, and raw. Displays on raw wood showed off lush green designs of leaves, natural icons like bugs and butterflies, and projects using natural materials in earth tones.

I have to admit this was my favorite section of the trend show. It (like the purist) was very calm to look at. But the gardener section was soothing in a spa-like way that the purist's starkness wasn't. (Well, except for the giant bug the size of my head. That was the opposite of soothing! I'm still trying to figure out why that is even a thing. Shudder.)

Of course, you can't have a display called "the gardener" without plants. And there was plenty of them on display, both real and fake. One shelf included succulents like have been so trendy in the U.S. recently, held in hand formed clay pots for a very natural look.

Butterflies are something of a perennial feminine icon in the crafts world, but they are right on trend with "the gardener". They can be used so many different ways in design, working well as a solo icon or in an all over pattern like the notebook below. Butterflies also work well in many different mediums, such as the stitching and stamping examples seen in "the gardener" trend show.

Like some of the other trend show displays, there was paint the "the gardener" display. But the paint here, in contrast to the bolder stains and acrylics in the other trend showcases, was largely watercolor. Its soft, free form character and translucency in capturing light fits perfectly with the natural feel of the gardener. (And this beautiful mountain painting made me really regret not packing my watercolors because it made me want to just sit down and paint!)

It wasn't just paints on display, however. This oil pastel drawing of vegetables looked good enough to eat! It certainly inspired me to get better acquainted with my recently acquired pastels.

Like with "the colourist", there are scarves on display in "the gardener" trend show. The "gardener" scarves are created from beautiful knit and crochet for a soft organic look.  The color palette is earthy, featuring natural, cornflower blue, and shades of brown, among others.

Another use of natural fiber and color tones in the gardener trend show was this oh-so-trendy weaving project. This wall-sized project combined several different types of fibers, and truly was an impressive sight in person!
