Pinterest Inspiration | Plaid + Solid

Plaid always makes me think of fall and winter and the holidays. The weather is definitely getting colder here in the midwest and this gorgeous plaid duvet set I found on Pinterest really inspired me this week.

This red duvet set is from Pottery Barn and I love the colors in it - a rich red mixed with a warm cream and brown combination. But I also love the way the duvet is styled in the photo - the solid, neutral sheets and quilted coverlet really make the colors and textures in the plaid set shine. It was the perfect inspiration for a layout.

All supplies from Designer Digitals | Patterned Paper: Berks Lane Paper Pack by Katie Pertiet. Cardstock: Textured Canvas: Neutrals Paper Pack (light gray) and Chandra Kit (dark grey) by Katie Pertiet. Frame: Classic Curled Photo Frames No. 06 by Katie Pertiet. Vintage Journaler: Beach House Memories Mini-Kit by Katie Pertiet. Word Art: Celebration of Life Brushes and Stamps by Ali Edwards. Embellishments: Spooktacular Kit (flower), Chandra Kit (gold tape), and Pebbled Traveler No. 01 (arrow epoxy) by Katie Pertiet. Ripped and Stitched Wordwise (ripped paper) and Wailua Kit (phrase tag) by Lynn Grieveson. Fasten Its! No. 02 (screw) by Pattie Knox.

I started this layout with the plaid paper as the base, similar to the plaid duvet in the inspiration photo. I then layered a solid light gray piece of cardstock over the plaid paper and added my photo, a journaler and a few embellishments. I wanted to keep most of my embellishments and colors fairly neutral, but also complementary to the colors in the plaid patterned paper. The primary colors I used are gray and white with just a few colored embellishments to coordinate with the colors in the photo. The final effect is certainly more muted than the inspiration photo but the effect is the same: the pattern and texture of the plaid is highlighted by contrasting it with a coordinating solid.

I love spending time on Pinterest and I always find something to inspire me. I hope that you are inspired by this design as I was. Let me know where you find inspiration and maybe I’ll use it in a future column. You can also follow my Pinterest boards here.
