Color Trends | Neutral Navy

Color trends often begin in the worlds of home decor and fashion before migrating to crafts. The latest color trend making its way to the papercrafting world, neutral navy, is no exception.

Color purists may argue that navy is not a neutral, but it is increasingly used as one, especially in fashion. Darkwash denim may be the ultimate in neutral navy – it goes with everything and can go almost anywhere. But in the last two years we’ve seen its influence spread beyond the basic in both fashion and home decor.

In the fashion world, navy has found popularity as a slightly softer alternative to black. It’s a trendy option for replacing everything from your “little black dress” to those black leggings. It’s even become a popular color for bridesmaids’ dresses!

The home decor world has seized on to the neutral navy trend as well. Best used in small doses due to its eye-catching drama, navy is being used for everything from accent chairs to kitchen islands to throw pillows. To see a few examples, visit Freshome.

Navy is perhaps most often associated with a nautical style in fashion and home decor. Last year we did see navy invade the scrapbooking world as a nautical trend. But this year, navy is back on its own – and trendier than ever.

Neutral navy nurseries are quite trendy in home decor, and BoBunny has seized on that trend for their newest baby themed line “Little Wonders”. The collection has two parts, one that pairs navy with pink and one that pairs navy with mint and dusky blue.

I bought a few sheets of the navy and pink part of the “Little Wonders” collection to try out on some baby pictures of my daughter. (Let’s not talk about the fact that she just turned 15 and there were still baby pictures to be scrapped, alright?)

CHA Mega Show 2015 | Scrapbook Travel Products

With all of the travel that I’ve been doing lately, I have travel scrapbooking on the brain! I will need a steady supply of scrapbook travel products to scrap all of the pictures of the places I’ve been flying off to (and will be going to in the near future). Luckily for me, scrapbook manufacturers are back in the business of producing travel themed items again after taking a short break during the economic downturn. There were plenty of travel product options on show at the CHA Mega Show 2015!

Templates have become go-to products for many scrapbookers with the rise of mixed media, and The Crafter’s Workshop has several new templates that are especially handy for pocket scrapbookers. Good Eats and Radar Fragment are perfect for making custom pocket cards!

For many people, travel means theme parks – specifically the Disney parks. Simple Stories is back with a sequel to their blockbuster “Say Cheese” collection, called “Say Cheese II”. The new collection builds onto the old one, with all of the elements working together. A new collection of pocket cards is sure to be popular!

Camping, featuring retro trailer icons, was a trendy theme this year. Bella Blvd’s interpretation of it in their signature color palette creates a collection that appears to be very 70’s influenced.

Crate Paper also did an interpretation of the retro trailers for their travel themed line called Journey. Their color palette and designs appear to be more 1950’s inspired, however.

Instead of campers, Pink Paislee took its vacation line to the skies with Atlas. The bright colorful collection is ultra modern and will be popular with pocket scrapbookers. The gold foil world map transparency from the Atlas collection is sure to attract a lot of attention, as are the silver foil airplanes!

Teresa Collins also brought gold foil to her new travel collection, Wanderlust. Her black, white and gold mini collection is neutral enough to be mixed in with other travel products to add a bit of pop or drama.

If graphic is more your style than gold foil, Echo Park and Carta Bella have plenty of travel products to make their fans happy. Under the Echo Park Paper brand name, new collections of designer cards for pocketing scrapbooking called “Getaway” are available in a nice subdued color palette.

The retro camper makes an appearance as die for Carta Bella. The company is also offering several other travel themed dies, stencils and stamps that cover every type of travel imaginable.

Carta Bella’s new travel collection is called Travel Stories, and the bold color palette is attention-getting. The pocket card designs on one sheet are very creative and unique.   Stamps with matching die sets were everywhere on the show floor, and Technique Tuesday has a great stamp set for pocket scrapbookers to use for travel scrapbooking called Going Places. The matching die set is also called Going Places.

There was lots to love in Tim Holtz’s CHA Mega Show 2015 announcements for travel scrapbookers. First up, was the repackaging of his mini blueprint stamps from 12 stamp packs into 4 stamp theme pack. This will make it much more affordable for consumers to buy just the theme that they need of the stamps, instead of possibly having to buy 8 they didn’t need to get the set of four that they did.

There was also plenty of new stamp designs that will make travel fans very happy.

For Tim’s mixed media fans (of which there are many), there are new stencils that will work great for travel scrapbooking of all kinds. There’s also an entire new idea-ology collection devoted to airmail themes called Passport that has great pieces in it for travel usage, like map washi tape .

What travel scrapbooking are you working on (or anticipating doing in the near future?) What products are you looking forward to seeing hit store shelves?

Noteworthy | 10.2.2012

Wait, is that a 10 at the start of this month’s date in the title? Holy cow, the year is going fast! October means mid-releases, and the holidays coming fast!

Speaking of the holidays, Carta Bella Paper Company is having a contest to see what scrapbookers can create with its Halloween-themed “All Hallow’s Eve” collection. Upload your creation to the Carta Bella Facebook page by October 8th at Midnight MDT and you could be one of three lucky winners of the Carta Bella collection of your choice from their currently shipping selection. Winners will be selected on October 9th.

In another sign that border punches have become the new tool battleground in the industry, Fiskars has announced a new border punch system called the AdvantEdge Punch System.

AdvantEdge Punch System

The AdvantEdge utilizes slide and lock technology which Fiskars says “lets you keep the paper in one place while the punch cartridge slides from one lock-in slot to the next for a perfectly aligned border.” The punch accepts interchangeable punch cartridges that cut 2.75″ borders, and a selection of nine designs are currently available in that size. (The Flower Garden design pictured below is packaged with the tool in the starter set.) The AdvantEdge will also work with the company’s previously released smaller interchangeable border punch cartridges for its more traditional border punch design.

First Look | Carta Bella Paper

Editor’s Note: Carta Bella Paper, sister company of Echo Park Paper, is going to be one of the most anticipated new companies showing product at CHA Summer 2012  in Chicago in a few weeks. Their debut product line has just hit stores. I asked guest writer Tami Morrison to take a look and preview the line for our readers — Nancy

Carta Bella Paper debuted recently accompanied by a lot of buzz in the scrapbook world. With the aesthetic of Creative Director Carina Gardner and the marketing mojo of Echo Park, this company is positioned to make a big splash on the scrapbooking scene.

I recently spent some time playing with their debut line, “Beautiful Moments“. The substantial, textured papers feature a vintage pink, gold, red, and black palette that inspire spring and summer layouts, and would also work great with Valentine’s Day photos.

“Dear Summer” layout supplies – Cardstock: Bazzill. Patterned paper: Carta Bella Paper (Beautiful Moments). Alphabet stickers: Carta Bella Paper (Beautiful Moments).  Stickers: Carta Bella Paper (Beautiful Moments). Embellishments: Prima (plastic flowers, wooden button), Jenni Bowlin (chipboard banner), Carta Bella Paper (journaling card), unknown (baker’s twine).

“Take Time” layout supplies – Patterned Paper: Carta Bella Paper (Beautiful Moments), unknown (lined background paper). Stickers: Carta Bella Paper (Beautiful Moments). Alphabet Stickers: Carta Bella Paper (Beautiful Moments), American Crafts (green).  Embellishments:  Pink Paislee (diecut flower), Scenic Route (chipboard arrow). Punch: Fiskars (border). Labelmaker: Dymo. Paint: unknown (black).

While the overall vibe of “Beautiful Moments” is decidedly flea market feminine, I was even able to make certain elements from the collection work for a masculine sports page.

“Hello Summer” layout supplies –  Cardstock: Bazzill. Patterned paper: Carta Bella Paper (Beautiful Moments). Stickers: Carta Bella Paper (Beautiful Moments). Alphabet Stickers: Jenni Bowlin. Photo Corners: 7 Gypsies. Labelmaker: Dymo. Embellishments: Unknown (carnival ticket, pompom trim).

My favorite thing about this line was the variety contained in it. Romantic flourishes and versatile dots and stripes mingle with vintage-graphic stars and numbers in a unique mix of motifs. The alphabet sticker sheet features three different fonts and colors, plus a set of numbers and two coordinating border strips.

Carta Bella will be debuting two additional new collections this summer. First up will be “Paris Girl”, designed by Samantha Walker, which will start shipping to stores in July.

Carta Bella’s Halloween-themed collection called “All Hallow’s Eve”, designed by Carina Gardner, will ship to stores in August:

Will you be checking out Carta Bella Paper’s new collections? Which one are you most excited to see?
