Gift Wrap with Your Silhouette! [Promo]

I'm a major fan of gift bags for wrapping presents. They are my favorite gift wrap cheat. You don't have to worry about finding a box for something that is a weird shape, or the shape of the box giving away your gift. Then, of course, there is the added benefit that they don't make a mess to clean up when they are opened, and they can be recycled, too!

[This is a promotional post for Silhouette.]

The downside of gift bags is how expensive they can be, running $5-$7 or more for a medium sized bag. Plain solid colored bags are available for much less but they look like you wrapping your gift was an afterthought. I found the solution in my Silhouette Portrait machine!

With a custom cut to decorate the bag, a print and cut tag, and a few embellishments, my solid color bag went from frumpy to fabulous!

The first step was to create a print and cut "Flower by Simple Stories" out of Silhouette Printable Cotton Canvas. I filled the shape with" yellow flowers by American Crafts" fill pattern, and then printed it on the canvas at the size that I wanted.

The canvas has a great texture that adds a luxury feel to the embellishment on the bag, but I wanted to emphasize that it was fabric. To accomplish this, I got out my Tim Holtz edge distresser and used it on the edges of the flower to create some fraying to show off the fabric. Then I adhered the flower - which was easy because the printable canvas is self-adhesive - and also adhered the white "blank space" from the center of the flower in place. This was to provide a more pleasing background behind the buttons, since having pink behind them would have been a bit distracting.

Next up, I got out my hot glue gun and jar of yellow buttons. I selected some really dark shades of yellow and got to work gluing them in place to create a center for the flower.

Even with the flower on it, the bag still needed a little something more. A print and cut gift tag on Silhouette Vellum was the answer! The flower on the "flower tag by American Crafts" perfectly coordinated with the shape of the Simple Stories flower, and it also matched the American Crafts floral fill print that I'd used on the flower.

Once I'd printed and cut the tag, I stamped a sentiment on it from the Hero Arts "Everyday Sayings" stamp set with Staz-On in Stone Gray by Tsukineko. All that was left then was to attach the tag to the bag. I did that with some twill by Papertrey Ink. I chose the twill because its nice stiff weight kept the tag off to the side at a jaunty angle instead of dangling straight down.
