Trend Watch | Gray and Yellow

The yellow and gray color trend that swept through the home decor industry last year has found a new home in this season's crop of scrapbooking supplies. As the Scrapbook Update crew covered the show floor at CHA Summer 2011, we spotted line after line that was either completely inspired by a yellow and gray color palette or at least included hints of it in some way.

When I say that this color scheme was big in the home decor industry last year, I mean big! And from the looks of things, it's still going strong this year. To demonstrate just how popular this color combination is, I put together a little pinboard on Pinterest displaying some of my favorite yellow and gray images from around the web.

And now, just as I collected some of my favorite home decor examples of yellow and gray, I've brought together a sampling of my favorite yellow and gray scrapbook supplies, as well!

Some scrapbooking collections are dominated by a yellow and gray color scheme, such as the Farmhouse line from October Afternoon. A sampling of decidedly yellow and/or gray papers are shown below, along with a similarly hued set of Sprinklers and a Wrap Pack from the same collection.

The Lemon Flower stack from Die Cuts with a View mixes yellow and gray with bright pops of green and sports both florals and sophisticated graphic prints. In this case the shade of gray used has a decidedly cool tone, and in fact silver glitter is used on many of the sheets in the paper pad.

My Mind's Eye warms up the yellow and gray color scheme with their Lost and Found 2: Sunshine collection, which also mixes in a fair amount of black and cream to give the entire collection a vintage, nostalgic feel.

Remember when I mentioned that yellow and gray was a trendy color combination in the home decor industry last year? Here's proof! When I redecorated our bedroom last summer, I selected yellow and gray bedding items from Target's Dwell Studio collection, and when it came time to scrap a photo of the results, I instinctively reached for My Mind's Eye's Sunshine collection.

Supplies | Patterned Paper: My Mind's Eye (Lost and Found Two: Sunshine Memories "Blossoms", Sunshine Two of Us Damask, Sunshine Forever "Classified", 6x6 Pad); Cardstock: Bazzill Basics Paper (White); Letter Stickers: American Crafts (Amy Tangerine: Ash); Decorative Sticker: Studio Calico (Yellow Journaling Stickers); Color Mist: Studio Calico (Sunshine); Button: Making Memories; Brads: My Mind's Eye (Lost and Found Two: Sunshine); Journaling Spot: Becky Higgins (Project Life); Cabochon: Etsy; Date Stamp: Office Supply

Teresa Collins' newly announced mid-season release, Carolina Breeze, mixes her sophisticated style with soft floral patterns.

The Sunshine Broadcast line from Sassafras is filled with sunny yellows and calm grays, with hints of aqua that evoke the feel of the ocean after a storm.

One of newcomer Authentique's debut lines, Blissful, is undeniably yellow and gray, and like the My Mind's Eye's Sunshine collection it also mixes in creams and blacks for a vintage feel.

Rhonna Farrer weaves her digital magic in her new Grateful Glam collection, putting her signature graphic flair on the yellow and gray trend.

Not every new line that incorporates the yellow and gray trend does so throughout the entire collection. Several new paper lines include this color palette in just one or two items in a line, sometimes mixed on the same side, and sometimes with gray on one side of the print and yellow on the other.

American Crafts' Amy Tangerine line is a perfect example of mixing just a touch of yellow and gray into a diverse collection. "Hello Doily" and "Oh Happy Grey," shown below, both sport gray on the front and yellow on the back, and the Kale (actually a greenish-yellow) and Slate Thickers add just a touch more of this fall trend.

Lily Bee's Memorandum line includes a yellow and gray paper, "Time Clock," in a pretty floral-inspired print.

KI Memories puts their signature funky twist on yellow and gray in this print ("Her Secret") from their Hot Date collection.

Crate Paper's Farmhouse line also includes a yellow and gray print, "Textile," with a subtle architectural pattern in yellow on the front and a warm gray sprinkled with red dots on the back.

The yellow and gray color scheme seems to have some serious staying power in the home decor industry, but will it have the same hold on the scrapbooking industry? Only time (and the next CHA) will tell!
