CHA Mega Show 2014 | Scrapbook Update Top Ten Hot Picks

It’s that time again – time to name the hottest brands from the CHA Mega Show 2014 in Anaheim last month!

This time around, several themes seemed to emerge as I assembled the list, themes that were evident in the show in general. Most notable perhaps was the large influx of truly quality new exhibitors, a group of which the show hasn’t seen like this in years. Another recurring theme, that was evident again and again on the show floor, was of companies who have remade themselves after challenges the past few years and are rising again creatively. Together, these two phenomena combined to lend an air of positivity and optimism to the show.

So, without further ado…here’s the Scrapbook Update Top Ten Hot Picks from the CHA Mega Show!

Brother Scan-n-Cut

Brother Scan-n-Cut

This machine has been taking the crafting world by storm in 2014, winning first the Innovations award at the CHA Mega Show and then Tool of the Year at Creativeworld in Frankfurt less than two weeks later. Scan-N-Cut enters a crowded, competitive market for digital diecutting that already featured at least four major competitors duking it out, but the machine’s unique ability to cut whatever it sees on a piece of paper is garnering it a closer look from crafters. We R Memory Keepers Acquires Lifestyle Crafts

Salt Lake City, Utah-based We R Memory Keepers announced today that the company has acquired Lifestyle Crafts.

Lifestyle Crafts just emerged victorious last month from a lengthy legal challenge by Spellbinders over alleged patent infringement by QuicKutz and Lifestyle Crafts (after its formation and acquisition of the QuicKutz line in June 2010).

According to a representative for We R Memory Keepers, Lifestyle Crafts will still operate as an independent brand under the corporate umbrella of We R Memory Keepers. Dan Stewart, the company’s founder and president, will not be continuing with Lifestyle Crafts post-acquisition. Lifestyle Crafts’ business and warehouse operations will be moved to We R Memory Keepers’ headquarters. The company can still be reached at its pre-acquisition contact information. CHA Summer 2013 | Hot Pick: We R Memory Keepers

Welcome back to Scrapbook Update’s CHA Top Ten Hot Picks list!

To see all the hot picks posted so far, visit this link. At the end, after I’ve published all ten of the picks, I’ll publish a summary list for easy reference.

So here, in no particular order, is the next hot pick for CHA Summer 2013 (aka Create-n-Connect)…

We R Memory Keepers is a company that has really stepped up their game the past few years, and consumers have responded. Long known for being a tool and album specialist, the company is finally developing into a quality producer of a broad scale of papercrafting products, and even branching into home decor.

This fold down table and organizer (which has an MSRP of $199 and ships in September) was much-discussed by attendees in Vegas:

Graphic 45 | It’s Your Day

spellbinders-winter-2013-cha-dies-card-13-1

Designer Yana Smakula is here today to show off some fabulous Graphic45 from their Secret Garden collection!

The beautiful intricate pattern of the lavender paper makes the large expanse of pattern appear lush and full, instead of feeling like white space since the paper is the only element. The curving arc across the top of the patterned paper – cut with a Spellbinders A2 Curved Borders One die –  is the perfect soft way to top the block of pattern off. A straight line would have been too harsh and graphic to match well with the other design elements.

This card also has a design element that could serve double duty. The seed packet cards are tucked into a pocket created behind the patterned paper element – that pocket could also serve to hold a gift like a gift card or tickets.

Supplies | Cardstock: Dovecraft (Premium White). Patterned Paper: Graphic 45 “Secret Garden” (Sun Kissed). Die Cutting Machine: Spellbinders (Grand Calibur). Dies: Spellbinders (A2 Curved Borders One). Stamp: Technique Tuesday (Wildflowers). Ink: Tsukineko. Gems: Dovecraft. Adhesive: Dovecraft. Corner Rounder: We R Memory Keepers Crop-A-Dile (Corner Chomper).

Designer: Yana Smakula

Yana Smakula is a newlywed from Ukraine (which is in southeastern Europe) with no kids but two black cats. She loves to travel across the world and meet new people, discover new cultures and just explore. So far together with her new husband she’s been to a few places in Europe (Poland, Check Republic and UK), Africa (Egypt, Tunisia and Israel), Asia (China and Sri Lanka) and USA. Their next dream destination is Madagascar, because they hear the nature there is simply breathtaking! Yana fell in love with the U.S. while living here (in Las Vegas, NV) as a high school foreign exchange student when she was a teen. She enjoys scrapbooking, mostly about her travels. Her other passion is cardmaking – she enjoys trying new products and techniques, experimenting and creating in different styles. She’s also very much into stamping (although she didn’t realize it until she took a close look at her cards and noticed almost all of them use stamps!). To learn more about Yana, visit her website.

Technique Tuesday | It’s Your Day

Designer Yana Smakula brings us the next project for our Technique Tuesday feature week that concludes today! It features a new set called “Wildflowers“ that is perfect for creating layered images or cards! (Yana also created a “Thinking of You” card earlier in the week using a sentiment from this set.)

Technique-Tuesday-Wildflowers

Chalkboard effects are currently very trendy in paper crafting. For this card, Yana created a chalkboard effect by stamping a shadow stamping technique using white ink on black cardstock. A little ink distressing of the sentiment block with the white ink completes the faux chalkboard effect.

Yana also used another technique – she took two small stamps, the “hello” text and the butterfly, and stamped them repeatedly to create a design block that carries much more weight in the design than those two tiny elements would without the repetition.

Supplies | Stamp: Technique Tuesday (Wildflowers).Cardstock: Dovecraft (Premium White). Patterned Paper: Authentique. Ink: ClearSnap (Color Box Pigment – Frost White 15080, ColorBox Cat’s Eye Chalk: Queue – Primary Elements 71704). Floss: We R Memory Keepers (Sew Easy Floss – Pink).  Adhesive: Dovecraft Foam Dots. Button: Dovecraft. Pencil: Marco. Punch: We R Memory Keepers Corner Chomper (Corner Rounder).

My Mind’s Eye Spotlight: Happy Birthday

MME2 MME3 MME4

Welcome to day two of our feature week highlighting the new CHA Winter 2013 releases by My Mind’s Eye!

I simply LOVE this new My Mind’s Eye collection called “Collectable” by Jen Allyson.  This collection is split into four different color ways: Notable, Memorable, Remarkable, and Unforgettable.  This card features cardstock from “Memorable” which uses some of my favorite patterns and a pretty pink and green color scheme.  I used one of the “Memorable: Hello” papers to create my medallion by cutting the little doily images from it and stacking them with foam adhesive.  This type of brad embellishment is also available in a pre-made form from My Mind’s Eye but, since I didn’t have matching ones on hand, I improvised!  I love the result.

My Mind’s Eye papers just feel good in your hand, not to mention the beautiful colors and the something-for-everyone color variations found in each collection. “Collectable” by Jen Allyson is to die for and I loved playing with it!

Supplies | Patterned Paper: My Mind’s Eye “Collectable: Memorable” (Friendly, Flawless, Details). Cardstock: DCWV (Olive). Stamp: Anna Griffin (sentiment). Punches: Fiskars (scallop border), We R Memory Keepers (Corner Chomper scallop). Die: Spellbinders (Ribbon Banners). Chipboard: unknown (letters).
