Best Wishes To The Mr. and Mrs.

 When it comes to weddings these days, your average young couple wants their wedding to be hip, trendy, and personal, but with just the right amount of class and elegance as a nod to the traditional.  You might find it difficult to combine traditionally opposing ideas like “trendy” and “elegant” in order to create cards (and gift items) for newlyweds on their big day. I consider this card cute and trendy, but still elegant and fit for a wedding.

Here are some tips to help you along:

1: Consider keeping the color scheme simple.  You might want to use mounds of flowers and lace (and if that fits your bride and groom – have at it!) but, you can effortlessly infuse a little classic elegance into almost any design by sticking to a few traditional colors.

2: Let the iconography make a statement.  Using cute bird and cloud images stamped in classic black and white, I was able to add a sweet and trendy feeling to the card.

3: Keep the design focused.  When it comes to big occasions – like weddings – everything is super embellished to make a statement. On my card, I used very specific, coordinating colors and stamps to convey my message.  In a sea of forgettable white cards printed with flowers and frills a clean and straightforward design could be a bold stand-out.

Using just ink and paper, Britt’s card is a great example of a “single layer” design. With the right stamp set, using just these elements can be very effective! The high contrast color and bold graphic elements carry the card without a lot of extra accessories.

Britt was excited about her experience using this stamp set:

I love this stamp set! The sentiments are so versatile and the impression of the stamps are nice and clean.  It can sometimes be very hard to find acrylic stamps that make a crisp impression, but these are some of the best ones I’ve used!

Make a WISH, Birthday Girl!

The two easiest and most effective principles of design – in my humble opinion – are repetition and unity.  You don’t have to have a working knowledge of design to know that “repetition” means repeating things, and “unity” means grouping things by theme or idea.

In this card I used a few different types of repetition.  The simplest was choosing a background paper with a flower pattern and a card with a scallop at the bottom – both of these provided me with repetition that I didn’t have to create myself.  I took inspiration from the polk-a-dotted lining in the envelope and decided to carry on using rounded shapes in my design.  I die cut and punched my papers with circles and scallops, which tied back to the dots and the card’s decorative edge.  And finally, since my round sentiment sticker already had a dotted border I decided to repeat that detail around the larger circle with a marker to unite my two main embellishments.  This card came together very quickly because my main focus was on creating repetition and unity in my design.

Love is Black & White

Valentine-January

 My usual mojo escaped me for this card so I turned to a favorite (and often free!) tool that I’ve been using since I first started making cards: card sketches.  I used the latest from one of my favorite challenge websites, Deconstructing Jen.  Sketches are great for jump starting creativity and, if you often find your cards lack balance or flow, following sketches can help strengthen your design sense.  I find that the more I see good design the more I use good design.

Also, I used a non-traditional color pallet for this Valentine because the craft-o-verse can get red and pink CRAZY this time of year.  I like to make a few Valentines that a husband or boyfriend wouldn’t be embarrassed to open at work!  These colors are pretty muted, so it’s important to give the layers some dimension so the card still feels dynamic and interesting.

ANW/Crestwood Buys Creativity Inc. Scrapbook, Decor Brands

ANW/Crestwood, the parent company of brands such as Paper Adventures and TPC Studio, has announced that its deal to acquire most of Creativity Inc’s brands is now final. Creativity Inc. brands Westrim Crafts, Autumn Leaves, DMD, Crop in Style, Hip in a Hurry, Room Relish and Paper Bliss are all now a part of ANW/Crestwood.

Creativity Inc. had previously announced in February that it was selling its scrapbooking brands and its Hip In A Hurry brand to ANW/Crestwood. Shortly before that announcement, Creativity Inc. was seen clearing out the remaining inventory for those brands at CHA Winter 2010 and had indicated to Scrapbook Update it planned to shelve the brands.

Creativity Inc. is retaining the rapidly-growing Blue Moon Beads brand.

At ANW/Crestwood, the Paper Bliss brand will become part of the TPC Studio product group. The rest of the newly acquired Creativity Inc. brands will be made into a new ANW/Crestwood unit called CreativityWorks. This unit will be based in the Los Angeles area and will operate in parallel to the company’s existing consumer units, TPC Studio and The Paper Company. Executive Vice President Nick Lazarou and Vice President Abbey Blaszczyk will run CreativityWorks for ANW/Crestwood.

For 2010, an agreement between the two companies will have product shipping continue out of the Creativity Inc. location in Van Nuys, CA. By the end of the year, however, ANW/Crestwood anticipates consolidating shipping for all of its units in one location. CreativityWorks will continue to operate a Hong Kong procurement office as Creativity Inc. has historically done for the purchased brands.

In a statement, ANW/Crestwood President and Co-CEO Mark Caliguire said, “We have acquired a business with a long history in the craft market, with brands that have been mainstays for years, but more importantly, this new company is comprised of a group of people with energy, creativity, product knowledge and a desire to continue to broaden into a number of new markets while expanding our core craft business”. He added, “I am excited about the sourcing expertise we have acquired and how well this will integrate into our current product teams.”

EVP Nick Lazarou stated, “The owners of ANW/Crestwood bring a new commitment to energizing this business. We have been given the green light to take this to another level with the commitment of the financial and creative resources necessary to make CreativityWorks a consumer products company to be reckoned with.”

Added VP Abbey Blaszczyk, “We have been working on designs, licenses and sales strategies to execute in anticipation of the finalization of this deal, and we are ready to hit the ground running with numerous product presentations in an array of consumer retail channels”.

ANW/Crestwood has a large booth (#1623) reserved for CHA Summer 2010 in Chicago.
