CHA Mega Show 2014 | Scrapbook Update Top Ten Hot Picks

It’s that time again – time to name the hottest brands from the CHA Mega Show 2014 in Anaheim last month!

This time around, several themes seemed to emerge as I assembled the list, themes that were evident in the show in general. Most notable perhaps was the large influx of truly quality new exhibitors, a group of which the show hasn’t seen like this in years. Another recurring theme, that was evident again and again on the show floor, was of companies who have remade themselves after challenges the past few years and are rising again creatively. Together, these two phenomena combined to lend an air of positivity and optimism to the show.

So, without further ado…here’s the Scrapbook Update Top Ten Hot Picks from the CHA Mega Show!

Brother Scan-n-Cut

Brother Scan-n-Cut

This machine has been taking the crafting world by storm in 2014, winning first the Innovations award at the CHA Mega Show and then Tool of the Year at Creativeworld in Frankfurt less than two weeks later. Scan-N-Cut enters a crowded, competitive market for digital diecutting that already featured at least four major competitors duking it out, but the machine’s unique ability to cut whatever it sees on a piece of paper is garnering it a closer look from crafters. Graphic 45 | It’s Your Day

spellbinders-winter-2013-cha-dies-card-13-1

Designer Yana Smakula is here today to show off some fabulous Graphic45 from their Secret Garden collection!

The beautiful intricate pattern of the lavender paper makes the large expanse of pattern appear lush and full, instead of feeling like white space since the paper is the only element. The curving arc across the top of the patterned paper – cut with a Spellbinders A2 Curved Borders One die –  is the perfect soft way to top the block of pattern off. A straight line would have been too harsh and graphic to match well with the other design elements.

This card also has a design element that could serve double duty. The seed packet cards are tucked into a pocket created behind the patterned paper element – that pocket could also serve to hold a gift like a gift card or tickets.

Designer: Yana Smakula

Yana Smakula is a newlywed from Ukraine (which is in southeastern Europe) with no kids but two black cats. She loves to travel across the world and meet new people, discover new cultures and just explore. So far together with her new husband she’s been to a few places in Europe (Poland, Check Republic and UK), Africa (Egypt, Tunisia and Israel), Asia (China and Sri Lanka) and USA. Their next dream destination is Madagascar, because they hear the nature there is simply breathtaking! Yana fell in love with the U.S. while living here (in Las Vegas, NV) as a high school foreign exchange student when she was a teen. She enjoys scrapbooking, mostly about her travels. Her other passion is cardmaking – she enjoys trying new products and techniques, experimenting and creating in different styles. She’s also very much into stamping (although she didn’t realize it until she took a close look at her cards and noticed almost all of them use stamps!). To learn more about Yana, visit her website.

Technique Tuesday | I Heart You

And we had one more project hiding, so here’s a bonus day of Technique Tuesday feature week for you! Designer Kathy Martin worked with the I Love You Seal stamp set from the Signed, Sealed, Delivered series of stamps.

Technique-Tuesday-I-Love-You-Seal

Signed, Sealed, Delivered consists of 13 seal designs and two Seal Companion sets that they can be assembled with to turn them into ribbon badges. The seals are great on their own, as Kathy shows here, or assembled into the ribbons.

Kathy made her stamped image appear to be a coordinated embellishment of the paper collection she used by stamping the image right onto one of the patterned papers. And speaking of embellishments – did you notice the blue card with the frame in it? It’s part of a sheet of patterned paper from the Chilled Cucumber Soup collection that has 3×4 cards on one side of it.

Supplies | Stamps: Technique Tuesday (I Love You Seal). Patterned Papers: Jillibean Soup (Chilled Cucumber Soup). Button: Prima. Jute: May Arts. Pearls: My Mind’s Eye.

Designer: Kathy Martin

Kathy Martin resides in North Carolina with her husband Dan and her son Christopher. She’s been paper crafting since 2001, and is currently on design teams for Bella Blvd, Doodlebug Designs, Love My Tapes, and Pebbles. When she’s not playing with paper she enjoys reading, cooking, baking, antiquing, crochet and cat naps. Read more about Kathy on her blog, Card-Blanc.
