Trend | Travel

So many scrapbookers begin the hobby with scrapbooking a big event. A wedding, baby, or big vacation gets a person inspired to pick up some papers and stickers and start recording their memories. At this CHA show, we saw a huge revival of themed product – most especially travel. Today I want to share some of the best travel lines that debuted at CHA Winter 2012.

Studio Calico | Abroad

“Abroad” is filled with great useful patterned papers, but they go above and beyond with garlands, fabrips, letter stickers, and shaped stickers that utilize map print. They also have die cuts and wood veneers of each state (USA), stamps, and more. The blues, greens, and neutral colors will be so versatile and would mix well with other brands as well as perfectly coordinate with existing Studio Calico products. Continue Reading →

Trend | Tags

From small to large, plain tags and journaling tags have been around for quite a while. At this CHA however, I’m noticing an emerging trend of more pre-decorated tags and with so many fantastic options being released, I wanted to share my picks from the CHA show floor.

The most exciting tags for me, are the Pink Paislee printed shipping tags. The printed style that they do can be accomplished at home with a plain shipping tag and digital kits, but it is time-consuming and difficult to get perfect printing all the way to the edges. These are beautifully done, and I can not wait to get them in my hands and create with them.

Noteworthy | 12.16.2011

Inspiration is coming in 2012 – that much is clear from this week’s noteworthy stories. It is exciting to see that so many new opportunities for learning and being inspired are coming! I’m feeling confident that 2012 is going to be a very creative year. Lots of new classes are being announced, and news of a designer book series was revealed this week as well. Here are this week’s stories:

When the holiday dust clears and January is upon us, wouldn’t it be nice to have some inspiration from a great group of creative women? Nathalie Kalbach announced “Creative Jump Start Summit 2012″ , a free event coming in January:

A group of wonderful, inspiring and creative women from around the globe in the scrapbooking and mixed media fields have joined together for the Creative Jump Start Summit 2012. We are coming together to tell you how we get back into the creative groove and how we get our creative juices flowing. We want to share with you to help you jump start your creativity in 2012.

Kit | Merry and Bright by Melissa

We’re getting into the Christmas spirit a bit early here at Scrapbook Update! This month’s Scrapbook Update kit, Merry and Bright, is filled to the brim with festive colors and motifs that will be perfect for scrapping all your winter and Christmas memories. In fact, I designed this kit to be used for either layouts or for a December Daily or Journal Your Christmas mini album. There are enough papers, alphabets, and sparkly baubles in this kit to keep you scrapping all December long, and while a few of the items are strictly Christmas themed, I kept the majority of the kit generic enough to be used for a variety of subjects.

The papers are a selection of Crate Paper Peppermint, Echo Park Season’s Greetings, and Studio Calico Classic Calico that blend bright pops of seasonal colors with sophisticated grays and grounding woodgrains for a fun, cozy feel.

Speaking of the papers, the main kit photo above only tells half the story about them as all of these sheets have lovely prints on their B-sides, as well. Continue Reading →

Noteworthy | 11.11.11

It’s 11-11-11 and what a week it’s been! With less than two weeks until Thanksgiving, and the holiday season getting into full swing, it’s been wonderfully busy and crafty here in my home. Online there’s still plenty of crafting excitement, sales, and more to be had in 2011 – check out this week’s Noteworthy stories:

‘Tis the season for sales, and www.designerdigitals.com is having their amazing quarterly sale - all of their digital scrapbooking products are 30% off now through November 16th at 3am EST. Many digital and hybrid scrapbookers (myself included!) look forward to this quarterly sale and use it to stock up. With a wide variety of styles and products from beautiful brushes by Katie Pertiet to word art from Ali Edwards and page templates by Cathy Zielske, there’s something for everyone. Even if you’re not into digital scrapbooking, there are many products that can be printed out and utilized beautifully on paper projects as well.

Stacy Julian’s Photo Freedom episode on My Craft Channel was especially inspiring this week. Focused on telling your stories, and not scrapbooking to “catch up”, Stacy inspires with numerous stories and layouts of her own. All previous epsiodes of her show on My Craft Channel can be viewed here. Continue Reading →

Noteworthy | 10.28.2011

The scrapbook world is preparing for the holidays this week it seems. Now I know that might seem extreme to some, but when we’re talking about providing ideas, inspiration, and helping to get ready to tackle holiday projects as crafters we do need all the time we can get! Of course, despite my love of the holiday season, I have more than just holiday spirit to share in this week’s Noteworthy column:

When looking through this week’s potential noteworthy stories, one name popped up three times. I’d say that is not only noteworthy, but lead off the week worthy! Ali Edwards is having a great week – and fans should be rejoicing. First she announced a brand new downloadable class available on her website called Storyology:

Topics covered during the almost 2-hour presentation include the reason why, getting ready to write, story mechanics, rhythms, etc. The class includes six different writing prompts and you are encouraged to take the time during the presentation to write your responses to those prompts (pause the video and then resume when you are ready).

Class includes a 7-page full-color PDF handout, plus 6 pages for responding to the writing prompts.

The class can be purchased here (cost $14). Continue Reading →

Trend Watch | Shades of Orange

From persimmon to peach, marmalade to mandarin…there’s a color that is not normally seen in my craft space that is invading my studio. That color is orange! In many shades, in various forms, this color I usually don’t play well with is not only invading the craft stores, it’s also working really well on my pages too!

While this is the usual time of year for shades of orange to make a cameo in my fall seasonal projects, this year it’s more than that. Paired with aqua, pink, grey, green, blue, and many more colors, I’m finding orange to be the perfect accent. Here are some of my favorite basics in orange:

Above: American Crafts “Nightfall” Thickers (Elm – Rust),  Core’dinations Tim Holtz Distress cardstock (Wild Honey),  Tim Holtz Distress Ink (Spiced Marmalade), Studio Calico Mr. Huey’s mist (Custard), Ranger Perfect Pearls mist (Mandarin).

Where is orange showing up in hot new product lines? Here are a few noteable places it has popped up: Continue Reading →

American Crafts to Produce Studio Calico Lines

American Crafts announced today that it has entered into an agreement with Studio Calico to manufacture, sell and distribute Studio Calico’s popular line of scrapbooking products.

Studio Calico was founded as a kit club in 2008 by April Foster. The company began manufacturing and wholesaling their own product lines in 2009. Both the kit club and wholesale product lines have become successes with consumers, rapidly growing the start-up company into a major player in the industry. Products such as Mister Huey’s color mist, Fabrips, and Wood Veneers have made Studio Calico not only a bestseller but a trendsetter during the company’s short life. The company’s designs are arguably responsible for igniting the passion for wood grain texture that is currently over taking the industry, for one.

American Crafts is based in Orem, Utah and has been making scrapbooking products since the early 1990′s. The company is known for products such as its Thicker line of alphabet stickers, pens, albums, and paper collections. In 2009, American Crafts purchased the Pebbles line of products, and they also launched a signature line of products by Amy Tangerine at CHA Summer 2011. Continue Reading →
