May’s CHA Favorites: Trinkets & Treasures

The Scrapbook Update staff just got home from the Craft & Hobby Association Winter 2010 show in Anaheim! I will be writing several CHA posts here for Scrapbook Update, as well as sharing some personal stories from the show on my own blog over the next week or so.

While at CHA, the number one question asked of me had to be “what are your favorites? What do you love?” The answer is not simple. As I search through my six hundred photos from the show I’ve yet to delete an image or eliminate a brand as a contender for my picks. The vibe on the show floor was so positive, and the products being released were fantastic.  What a wonderful thing it is for me to be struggling to narrow down my favorites! I’ve never before had that problem at a show!

Today, I’ve decided to share my favorite “trinkets & treasures” from the show. From buttons to flowers to jewels the show floor was overflowing with bits and pieces that made me want to get creating right away. Here are some of my top picks:

Jenni Bowlin’s embellishments were all vintage treasure. Her buttons and butterflies were so amazing!

Kaisercraft has a cute new line called Devonshire, and I love this embellishment pack:

K & Co. has a vintage inspired line called Handmade. I loved these flowers:

Nikki Sivils came out with four colors of fantastic burlap covered buttons-

Websters Pages booth was filled with beautiful treasures. These sparklers are flat on the back (meaning there is no button shank) so they’re ready to go on your pages!

The Girls Paperie has these adorable charms that have it all – glitter, cute words, rhinestones, and lovely metal detail.

One of the sweetest lines at the show, Dear Lizzy by American Crafts charmed me for sure. These crocheted flowers will be so much fun.

Tim Holtz added some amazing items to his idea-ology line. These buttons were my #1 favorite from the line. They are metal (and other materials) – not painted plastic – so they’re a quality button that could be used on so many things.

Making Memories introduced a whole line of simple to make jewelry that is vintage inspired. Looking at the flowers and charms I saw a lot of things I wanted to use for my scrapbooking as well.

Finally Queen & Co came out with these Ice Rox. They are adhesive backed dots (like jewels or pearls) except they’ve got a multi-faceted shine that is off the hook. Photos don’t do them justice.

Stay tuned for more picks, trends, and so much more. I’ve got a lot of ground to cover!

Top Product Trends from CHA-Summer 2009

CHA-Summer is over, and time has given us a chance to synthesize the new products and trends that we saw. Here’s Scrapbook Update’s analysis of the top product trends that we saw on the show floor at CHA-Summer 2009:

Kitchen Themes

Lots of companies are trying to capitalize on the nesting trend that the recession has brought us, as well as on the upcoming holiday gift market for handmade recipe albums. Food and kitchen-themed collections were shown at CHA-Summer by companies that included BasicGrey, Graphic 45, and BoBunny. For BasicGrey, in particular, the collection was a big expansion of its themed designs (which had previously been limited to its baby & winter holiday collections).

Vintage Holiday Themes

CHA-Summer always sees the release of the winter holiday lines. This year, there was a heavy emphasis on vintage in the holiday line releases. Certain companies, you’d expect to see that emphasis from, such as Graphic 45, Pink Paislee, and Webster’s Pages. But other companies that are more flexible in their style, such as KaiserCraft, BoBunny, and Cosmo Cricket also showed vintage-inspired lines for the holidays.

Pink Christmas

Of all the festive colors you might associate with the winter holidays, pink probably isn’t high on the list. Yet many companies this year were showing holiday lines that incorporated a good deal of pink. Among the companies celebrating a pink Christmas this year were Nikki Sivils Scrapbooker, BasicGrey, My Minds Eye, and Upsy Daisy Designs. In some collections, the pink completely replaces the traditional red, while in others it complements it.

Cherries

Cherry icons started trending at CHA-Winter and they were seen in several lines at CHA-Summer. Some of the manufacturers showing cherry icons in their designs included Nikki Sivils Scrapbooker, Basic Grey, and Cosmo Cricket.

Die Cut & Laser Cut Papers

Lots more lines are using die cut or laser cut papers in lieu of higher-priced embellishments in their lines. Some of the new styles are patterned papers with a die-cut outer edge, and some styles are more complicated laser cut “lace” papers. As the offered embellishments in lines have decreased, the offerings of these “paper as embellishment” options have increased. Notable companies on the CHA-Summer show floor that were offering die-cut or laser cut paper options included Little Yellow Bicycle, Crate Paper, BasicGrey, BoBunny, Sassafras, Jenni Bowlin, and Pink Paislee.

Buttons

After falling out of favor for awhile, buttons are back, presumably for their affordability and versatility. Buttons also appeal to cardmakers, an expanding market that many scrapbook companies are trying to reach. BasicGrey, Making Memories and BoBunny were among the companies showing button assortments with their new collections.

Chipboard Buttons

An extension of the resurgence of buttons is a trend toward a new kind of button: chipboard buttons. These are lightweight and easier to adhere than real ones. Jenni Bowlin showed some beautiful ones at CHA-Winter, and added a huge assortment at CHA-Summer. Making Memories showed some holiday ones. If you’d like to design your own buttons, Technique Tuesday has an exciting product – buttons made from their chipboard tile material that can be stamped, inked, glued, or painted!

Journaling Products

Part of the new trend toward affordable embellishments has been an emphasis on journaling products like pre-designed tags, stickers and sheets for journaling. Loads of lines had some form of these embellishments, but standouts included Little Yellow Bicycle, Basic Grey and Jenni Bowlin.

Felt Embellishments

This trend is possibly a hold-over from the 1970′s trend that has all but disappeared due to the rise of vintage. Felt embellishments were shown by companies in a variety of styles, from Sassafras’s 1970′s signature style to more vintage looks from BasicGrey & Making Memories.

Pearls

Along with the rise of vintage style in scrapbooking has come a new kind of bling: pearls. Prima showed a large selection of pearl designs in its CHA-Summer collection, and KaiserCraft was among the other manufacturers adding pearls to their line of embellishments.

Fabric Embellishments

The trend toward texture in scrapbooking has continued through the use of fabric embellishments. Prima, Pink Paislee, and Webster’s Pages were among the companies showing various fabric embellishments (primarily tags) at CHA-Summer. But most notable were the denim and corduroy offerings of new exhibitor Buzz & Bloom, who won CHA’s Innovations award for the CHA-Summer 2009 show for their product offerings.

Bingo Cards

Bingo cards started showing up at CHA-Winter and they were back with a vengence at CHA-Summer. Unity Stamp, Tattered Angels, and Jenni Bowlin were among the companies showing bingo card designs in various products.

CHA Craft Supershow is a Big Draw

Yesterday (Friday) was the first day of the CHA Craft Supershow in Orlando. When I arrived at the Orange County Convention Center shortly after 11am, an hour after the show’s official opening time, I was greeted by this sight at the registration area:

IMG_5967I couldn’t even get the whole crowd into the photo. What you can’t see is the line that stretches from the far end of the registration area in the photo, all the way across the back of the registration area to where I am standing, and then about that same distance again across the lobby area. Attendees were reporting a 20-30 minute wait to pick up their pre-registered tickets.

CHA officials reported that 5,000 tickets were pre-sold for this weekend’s show.

The vendor hall was not empty while all these people were stuck in line waiting to pick up their tickets, either. This is what it looked like inside the hall:

IMG_6073Quite simply, the place was wall-to-wall people the entire day. It was hard to move without bumping into someone. There was always a wait to checkout in booths, and waits for make-n-takes were lengthy. Every vendor I spoke to seemed thrilled about how their business was going on Friday. In some cases I saw signs that certain items had already sold out for some vendors.

At Papertrey Ink, a stamping company which usually only sells online, there was a line to even get into their booth to shop. They had their booth set up with a line coming in the door that snaked around the exterior wall before returning to the register at the exit. Customers essentially shopped as they were in line for the register. First thing in the morning, the line was a couple dozen people long just to get to the entrance of the booth to start shopping.

On the left, attendees do the Papertrey make-n-take while on the right shoppers wait to get into the Papertrey booth.

Make-n-takes were extremely popular and the waits were long despite them being offered in many booths for consumers to choose from. All the make-n-takes I saw were being offered at no charge. Consumers seemed to really being enjoying trying new things. I saw a lot of people having to have techniques explained to them, which meant they were trying something they hadn’t done before. Some of the make-n-takes were quite involved (which accounted for some of the waits of course) but the result was that the consumer could take home a really inspiring project and really learn something in the process.

In the Provo Craft booth, one of the make-n-take areas was creating a calendar in a wooden frame.

Unlike many consumer shows, which seem to actively discourage the presence of children, CHA made an effort to encourage consumers to bring their children with them to the Craft Supershow. It’s never too early to start creating the next generation of craft consumers! There was a whole kids’ crafting area set up on the show floor along with a bounce house for the littlest kids.

The kids' crafts area was busy all day with kids getting hands on!

Kids weren’t just getting busy in the area meant just for them, either. I saw kids taking part with real interest in make-n-takes all over the show floor.  Hopefully this is a good sign for the future health of the crafts industry that a new generation of crafter is being nutured.

Misc notes from the CHA Craft Supershow:

  • Several manufacturers (including Creative Imaginations and Nikki Sivils) were running make-n-takes and then had signs up to tell consumers what retailer booths at the show were selling the products that were being used.
  • The crowd was very demographically diverse, especially compared to previous scrapbook shows that I have attended.
  • Facts and figures: approximately 100 vendors and 5000 pre-sold tickets for the weekend
