Noteworthy | 9.02.2011

As we enter September the announcements and excitement is at fever pitch. Here at Scrapbook Update, Editor Nancy Nally has been busily restoring the site after a catastrophic server failure. While this week has been noteworthy around here for reasons we wish it wasn’t, the scrapbook industry is booming with wonderful things this week! Blogs are bursting with new inspiration as CHA released products hit shelves fast and furiously, new design teams are being formed, and so much more. Here are some of the most noteworthy items of the week:

Rhonna Farrer has been designing beautiful scrapbooking products for many years, and after House of 3 closed, I had hoped to see her branch out on her own. Over the summer she has offered some beautiful digital designs on her blog, and recently put out a call for design team members.

This week she announced her new creative team, and now her website has been re-designed and is open for business with digital designs perfect for digital or hybrid crafting. She announced the details of the new shop on her blog, and stressed that her goal is to uplift & inspire through digital designs and project inspiration.

Speaking of project inspiration, Hambly Studios posted a simple tutorial of how to use washi tapes to create custom banners. Finding a way to use multiple bits of the tape in such a different way is refreshing and I can’t believe I never thought of it! Expanding on their idea, I’m now inspired to punch or die cut shapes from paper that has been covered with tape. A second project using the technique was posted this week on Hambly’s blog on as well. I predict we’ll be seeing a lot of washi tape banners all around the internet!

This week Becky Higgins shared news and images of the new 2012 Project Life designs, Cobalt and Clementine. She shares many photos of the new product designs and promises that there is still a lot more to come. Last Friday she revealed the images of the new binders, and also announced that from now on the albums will be made by We R Memory Keepers.

They are absolutely a leader in binders and albums. And because they’re making our albums, this means you can expect nothing less than … the very best. I’ve been personally using We R binders for all of our family scrapbooks for nearly 10 years.

Higgins answers a lot about the new binders in her post, including the target date for availability late this year.

A new on-line event is coming the weekend of October 20-22. “Spawn of True Scrap” is now open for registration. The event features 17 instructors who each are bringing a new class (presented in video format), make ‘n takes, and more. The instructors include Jennifer McGuire, Nic Howard, Shimelle Laine, and many more – myself included. For more information or to register visit the Spawn of True Scrap site.

Die Cuts with a View announced that they are releasing a number of new paper pads through Michael’s. Don’t look for their name on the product though – it’s being released under Michael’s in-house brand name, Recollections. In the blog post, the company explained:

Basically, these stacks are designed & produced by us at DCWV and sold under Michael’s own private brand, Recollections. We were honored to be chosen to represent them in this way! To us, it means they love working with us as a company and they LOVE our designs :) What could be more flattering??

The first of the new paper designs are available now, with more designs coming in the next few weeks.

Finally this week, I will share some noteworthy new releases. Pink Paislee’s Nantucket and Phantom collections have been spotted on store shelves. Also in stores some of the new Doodlebug bakers twines and the bakers twine inspired “doodle twine” alphabet stickers that have been anxiously awaited by the Scrapbook Update staff and many others.

“Noteworthy” is a new regular weekly column at Scrapbook Update. Have something new & noteworthy to share? Feel free to leave a comment, or if you have something you would like considered for next week’s column, email may@scrapbookupdate.com with a link or press release.

Michaels Releases iPhone App

I was quite excited several months ago when arts and crafts retailer Michaels began accepting coupons via smartphone at their checkout. I was even more excited to find that they’ve recently released an app for the iPhone that combines their electronic coupon functionality with some exciting new features.

The app is well laid-out, easy to use, and filled with pleasing visuals such as the screen that greets users on opening.

Once loaded, the app gives customers access to a number of features, most notably the ability to browse sales flyers and search for products.

The “Deals” section of the app provides access to the Michaels weekly ad in a mobile-friendly format. Customers can navigate by category and then drill down to see more details about sale items.

The “Coupons” section will probably be the most-used in the app as it gives customers a way to carry coupons without the hassle of printing them and then remembering to bring them along to the store. Coupons are automatically loaded into the app when available and removed after they have expired. Each coupon can be used multiple times (subject to the current “one per customer per day” wording) and contains a barcode that is scanned at the checkout.

I found the “Projects” section to be surprisingly well-rounded, containing in-depth instructions for craft projects in a number of categories. The images, shown as a thumbnail on the instructions screen, will display a larger version when tapped.

The “Lists” feature provides a place for customers to compile one or more shopping lists to use in the store. It’s tied closely with the “Products” section that allows customers to browse available items (the products listed are not tied to a particular store’s inventory and may not reflect current stock) and add them to a shopping list. Users can also add items manually by typing in text.

The “Products” section, which I’ve already mentioned, allows users to browse available items by navigating through categories to find products. Customers can drill down to a specific product to read details, and there is also a space for reviews  (though none of the items I browsed had reviews yet). No pricing information is provided for items.

Customers can also view upcoming classes and events at their local store under the “Events” button. The app also has functionality to locate stores nearest to you, just in case you catch the crafty bug while traveling.

The app also provides the ability to read QR (Quick Response) codes to allow customers quick access to information on the web. These codes are “scanned” by holding the iPhone’s camera over the code until it is registered by the app, which will then redirect the user to the appropriate web page.

Droid users, don’t despair!! Michaels corporate office has assured Scrapbook Update that an Android version of the app is planned, although there is no release date available yet. Scrapbook Update will keep you informed of this and any other developments as the areas of tech, crafting, and retail continue their exciting convergence.

[Update] Michaels Provides Details About Debit Card Data Theft

Michaels Stores, Inc. has made public more details about the theft of customer bank account data from some of their stores via compromised debit card PIN pads.

The company has identified what it describes as “less than 90″ PIN pads from its U.S. stores (less than 1% of the total in use) that appear to have been tampered with. The tampered pads were found spread through stores in 20 different states around the country. Visit the Michaels website for a full list of affected stores.

The company has also removed approximately 7,200 PIN pads from its stores that are similar to the tampered ones. Until these pads are replaced, customer credit and debit transactions will be processed directly on the register at the affected stores. Michaels Stores are also conducting security examinations of all Canadian store PIN pads as a precaution.

The latest from the investigation indicates that compromised PIN pad transactions occurred between February 8th and May 6th. Fewer than 100 Michaels customers have reported fraudulent transactions on their debit cards from the data theft, the company says.

Michaels said in a statement Thursday that the Secret Service has commended their response to the data theft. The company is still recommending that customers take precautions such as watching their bank statements for fraudulent transactions. Any unauthorized transactions should be reported to the card issuer.

Michaels Customers Victims of Debit Card Fraud

The U.S. Secret Service is investigating a rash of debit card fraud cases that appear to be linked to Chicago-area Michaels store transactions.

Chicago media are reporting that Bloomingdale (IL) police have received 16 reports of fraudulent ATM withdrawals made from consumers’ debit card accounts, and scores of other fraud reports have been made to authorities across the Chicago area by shoppers at the company’s 35 area stores. All of the fraudulent transactions apparently involve $500 withdrawals made at out-of-state ATM’s. All of the victims had previously made transactions at one of Michaels Chicago-area stores.

Compromised PIN pads, a common way of stealing debit card identities, in Michaels stores are speculated to be to blame for the string of frauds, but the investigation is still ongoing. Customers who have made purchases at Michaels stores should monitor their card statements for fraudulent activity and report any unauthorized activity to the card issuer. Consumers may also want to consider changing PIN numbers and other security settings on cards used in Michaels stores.

Michaels says it was contacted about the fraud this week by banking and law enforcement officials, and is working to assist authorities in the investigation.
