Every year at show time, I write at least a handful of stories on Scrapbook Update that start out something like that first paragraph. Sharing stories about designers embarking on new stages in their careers, and bringing exciting new products to scrapbookers in the process, is one of my favorite things to do at Scrapbook Update. But this time is different.

This time, it’s an announcement that I was intimately involved in. May is a friend and former writer for this site, and I have been the social media manager for Buttons Galore since earlier this year. I was involved behind the scenes in the development of this line. This is an announcement that I’m excited to share both personally and professionally. Continue Reading →

Update | Michaels Stores, Lia Griffith, May Flaum, Bella Crafts and more!

Wow, the news has been coming like crazy, and we are overdue for an Update column! Here’s what you might have missed!

In case you missed it last month, Stampin’ Up! has discontinued their Blendabilities line of pens. The alcohol markers suffered from quality issues with the attaching of the tip during manufacturing that could lead to the marker drying out. For information on receiving a refund if your markers are defective, visit the Blendabilities FAQ.

Bella Crafts Publishing, publisher of Bella Crafts Quarterly, has made several big announcements in recent months. They have rebranded, announced a new publication (Craft Techniques) and also a new event!

The event, called Bella Crafts Connections, will take place September 24th-27th at the Mall of America. This is a similar time frame as was previously occupied by the Archiver’s Scrapfest at the Mall of America, before the Archiver’s bankruptcy and store closures. The Bella Crafts event is planned to be huge, and not just for scrapbooking. The company is promising 60-70 craft workshops in areas like mixed media, jewelry making, ice resin, needle arts, as well as more. Over 20 teachers, including Lisa Pavelka, Seth Apter, Gina K, and Eileen Hull, are planned for the event. Continue Reading →

Big Picture Classes: Forever is Gone [Updated]

Big Picture Classes has notified its customers that a huge transition is coming to the company soon, requiring some changes that have drawn the ire of its customer base.

BPC-websiteThe company had indicated when it announced that it had been sold to Studio Calico in August that a new website was in the works for its customers. On Friday, the company shared more information about the website in announcements via email and on their website – and shared for the first time that the new site will not include many of the company’s previous classes. A large number of classes, which were sold to students with the promise of “forever” access, will be retired from Big Picture’s web presence in February, after a transition period during which the company is promising to facilitate the downloading of class materials (both pdf and video content) for students. Update | 4.15.2014 – Project Life Stampin’ Up!, Scraptime, Studio Calico, Simon Says Stamp, Bella Blvd

There’s lots of news today from the industry’s biggest & brightest names…let’s dive right into it!

Becky Higgins has just announced on her blog that she is partnering with Stampin’ Up! to create exclusive Project Life products for the direct sales market. The announcement promises card collections, accessory packs, albums, pocket pages, tools, other accessories, and stamps (in keeping of course with the mission of Stampin’ Up!). The card packs will be somewhat different than the ones sold in retail stores in two major ways, however. First, they will have square corners – unlike the signature rounded corners of the current Project Life products. Second, the Project Life Stampin’ Up! cards will come in packs of 100 double-sided designs, with no duplicates in a pack.

Project Life products will be available for order through Stampin’ Up! representatives on May 1st, and more product preview information will be available soon. In the announcement, Higgins also promised a future digital release of the Stampin’ Up! exclusive products. Continue Reading →

Whether you have been scrapbooking for years or are new to the hobby, one thing that we can all benefit from is using kits in our crafting lives. I’m a big fan of incorporating kits (both homemade and purchased) into your scrapbooking because I find that it is a great way to use up your stash, get creative with how you mix up supplies, and try new combinations and find unexpected ideas as well.

Hi there – I’m May Flaum and today I’m here to share some thoughts on kits, as well as giving away a spot in my upcoming Big Picture class Kit-tastic. One question that I get a lot is – why would you make or buy general crafting kits? It is a good question, and so today I thought I’d address the reasons that I choose to craft with kits on a regular basis. Continue Reading →
