So many scrapbookers begin the hobby with scrapbooking a big event. A wedding, baby, or big vacation gets a person inspired to pick up some papers and stickers and start recording their memories. At this CHA show, we saw a huge revival of themed product – most especially travel. Today I want to share some of the best travel lines that debuted at CHA Winter 2012.

Studio Calico | Abroad

“Abroad” is filled with great useful patterned papers, but they go above and beyond with garlands, fabrips, letter stickers, and shaped stickers that utilize map print. They also have die cuts and wood veneers of each state (USA), stamps, and more. The blues, greens, and neutral colors will be so versatile and would mix well with other brands as well as perfectly coordinate with existing Studio Calico products.

Tim Coffey for K&Co | Travel 2012

Focusing on tropical seaside paradise, this Tim Coffey collection is heavy on creams and brown, accented with coral, blues, and green. Postage stamps, sea life, shells, and palm trees are heavily featured in this line. Whether a day at the beach or a vacation to somewhere oceanside, this line will be fantastic for all things nautical. It manages to have a vintage flair but not over do it.

Janet Hopkins for Bazzill | Wayfarer

Janet Hopkins has released a new line of twelve papers (also available in a paper pad in 12×12 and 6×6 size) and a sticker sheet called Wayfarer. The line mixes trendy design elements with classic travel motifs and fairly neutral colors.

Webster’s Pages | Palm Beach

Whether you’re heading to sunny Florida or any tropical destination, this new line from Webster’s Pages will be amazing for your travel pages. Some of the patterns could be used for non-beach projects if the subject was wearing something that coordinated with the coral, blues, and greens in this line. I especially love the coordinating cameos being offered, which are so unique and beautifully themed to this line that I can’t wait to try them out.

Glitz Design | Happy Travels

Filled with color, florals, and plenty of airplanes, Happy Travels stood out from the crowd as being a travel line that is a bit unusual. A lot of the elements stood out and would work on their own, and many of the papers could easily work for layouts that had nothing to do with traveling. I really like the purple compass paper and the stickers and embellishments as well.

Heidi Swapp | No Limits

Listed as coming soon to Scrapbook.com, no limits was one of the lines that Heidi Swapp released in her new line of products through Pink Paislee. It features map-heavy designs and really great accents like dimensional stickers in Heidi’s signature font and great paper trim (both shown above). I like the general feel of this line, as well as how easily it could be used on general pages as well.

Tim Holtz Idea-ology | Destinations

Released in both a paper pad and stickers, Destinations is the new travel themed product from Tim Holtz. Many of his embellishments, die cuts, and stamps (both new and past) also coordinate with these offerings. I have worked extensively with this product to create CHA show samples (for Tim Holtz) featuring this line, and I have a layout to share with you here to show the line at work.

This line does offer some USA-themed parts, but overall is very flexible. I especially liked the tiny white and kraft stickers that are useful in both travel or general themed layouts.

There is definitely a map-heavy trend going on, something I like because it has a general explore feel to it without being too specific. Neutrals blues and greens rule, the addition of coral in several lines doesn’t surprise me as that is an emerging trendy color that we’ve been noticing. (Note: watch for Melissa’s article on that coming soon!)

Another emerging trend is the use of cameras – from Amy Tangerine’s new album covered with cameras to Echo Park’s paper filled with vintage inspired cameras, and die cuts, stickers, and more from other companies. Whether it’s travel specific or just used randomly, the camera is a very popular image these days.

There are other travel lines already out now including the Tropical Travelogue by Graphic 45 (already in stores), and I believe we will continue to see travel, journey, and other themed product that continues to balance between being useful for vacation scrapbooking and being able to be used for other themes and subjects as well.

An explosion of signature lines has been happening in the crafts industry, and in Anaheim this month Pink Paislee will be unveiling partnerships with two new signature names: Heidi Swapp and Christy Tomlinson.

Pink Paislee, founded in January 2008, has rapidly become an industry mainstay by producing not only its own brand of lines but also licensed lines from popular designers such as House of 3 and Collage Press. The company will be at CHA Winter 2012 in booth #2091.

Heidi Swapp, who formerly had a signature line with Advantus, is returning to the market at CHA Winter 2012 as a solo brand after several years as part of the House of 3 brand that created digital products and also has licensed designs through Pink Paislee. Pink Paislee is partnering with Swapp to handle the manufacturing, customer service, logistics and distribution of the Heidi Swapp signature line, while Swapp will maintain ownership and creative direction of the brand and its designs as well as responsibility for product development, marketing, and education.

This arrangement is strikingly similar to the recently announced deal between Studio Calico and American Crafts, and emphasizes the increasing importance of economies of scale in product production in the industry, and the need for the creative business owners in the industry to rely on experts in non-creative areas of running their enterprises.

In addition to her new product line, Swapp also has a show on My Craft Channel called Create to Remember that is currently in its second season of shows. She will also be the subject of the June/July 2012 edition of Northridge Publishing’s new book series, Signature Series.

No peeks at Swapp’s CHA Winter 2012 products have been revealed yet but the line will be on display in the Pink Paislee booth in Anaheim.

Christy Tomlinson, known to many for her work as a CKU instructor and as the owner of the Scarlet Lime online store and kit club, is also partnering with Pink Paislee. Tomlinson is licensing designs for her work to create a line for Pink Paislee called SHE ART. The line is intended to target a wide range of crafting markets: scrapbooking, mixed media, home decor and art journaling among them. SHE ART will be unveiled the week of January 23rd on Tomlinson’s blog, and will be on display in the Pink Paislee booth at CHA Winter 2012.

“We believe in the process of creating art in whatever form it takes shape,” said Rebecca Cross, owner and creative director for Pink Paislee. “Christy’s SHE ART concept encourages new techniques while also inspiring women everywhere to take a leap of faith into creativity. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to put her designs on paper and to help her reach consumers all across the world.”

“I am excited to develop a line of products that not only have artsy fun possibilities for creating both papercrafting projects and mixed media projects; but meaningful ones as well,” said Christy Tomlinson.

Tomlinson has also just announced a signature stamp line with Unity Stamp Company. The stamp line is a combination of texture backgrounds, and a few doodles and two SHE ART figurines, along with a few other designs.

Unity Stamp Co. will not be exhibiting at CHA Winter 2012.

Noteworthy this week has new stuff hitting shelves, new opportunities to learn fun stuff and a company that's doing good things.

The days are getting shorter here, which means they seem to fly by that much faster. I can hardly believe another week has passed, and it’s time to share the noteworthy stories I’ve found:

Let’s start with a company and their customers who have made a $60,000 donation possible! I’m talking about Stampin’ Up! and their recent donation to the BCRF (Breast Cancer Research Foundation) in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

A special Strength & Hope stamp set and Strength & Hope digital kit were designed specifically for the campaign, and contained inspirational messages and images. Both were promoted through Stampin’ Up! direct-sales representatives, also known as demonstrators.

BCRF is dedicated to preventing breast cancer and finding a cure in our lifetime by funding clinical and translational research worldwide. For more information about BCRF, visit www.bcrfcure.org.

It’s always so wonderful to see a company doing something to give back and working towards making a difference for a cause.

Big Picture Classes announced their 2012 line-up of 4-Expert Classes this week. Most notable for 2012 is that Big Picture will be featuring Scrapbooking’s first true celebrity designer Becky Higgins in her first ever online class.

We are celebrating 5 years of 4Experts at Big Picture Classes! We are thrilled to announce Becky Higgins, Heidi Swapp, Nic Howard and Stacy Julian as our expert line-up in 2012. We join you in anticipation of these four 12-week workshops, hosted in unique and custom classrooms, designed to provide the very best that BPC has to offer.

More information on each class, the dates they will run, and a video from each instructor can be found here. Registration opens approximately eight weeks prior to the start date of each class.

Speaking of new classes, Something Splendid announced their newest offering, the “My Thankful Journal” class:

We are so thrilled to announce the next splendid online workshop entitled “My Thankful Journal” starting November 10th!

What are you thankful for? What puts a smile on your face? How are you blessed?

This class will focus on creating a chipboard album, and there are options for both receiving a kit ($52 including shipping within USA/$58 international) or simply signing up for a ‘class ticket’ ($15) which will give you access to the class materials. More information and a promotional video can be found on the Something Splendid site.

Let’s take a moment and talk about new products! The Picadilly and Little Black dress lines from BasicGrey (including the coordinating Hero Arts stamps) hit shelves this week, which is very exciting indeed!!

Next, let’s look at the Red & Black line extension that just came out from Jenni Bowlin. This classic line never gets old – I love these new papers and can see myself adding them in and using them in addition to my existing JBS stash!

Finally, American Crafts mid-release line Chap is hitting store shelves! The colors are fantastic in this line – I plan to explore the possibilites of this line for some travel, outdoor, and other random pages.

Heidi Swapp is building buzz for a new project to debut in 2012.

Longtime scrapbook celebrity and veteran product designer Heidi Swapp has something new in the works! The details are being kept under tight wraps for now, but an unmanned booth at the CHA Summer 2011 show gives the tiniest of glimpses into Heidi’s latest venture.

A looped video playing in the booth, narrated by Heidi, emphasizes memories, telling your story, and the rapid pace at which life passes us by but doesn’t go into any further detail.

Press materials for this venture are just as lean on specifics, focusing more on describing Heidi’s already well-known scrapbooking style and philosophy than providing concrete details. It’s the non-text portion of the press kit, however, that was most intriguing to the staff at Scrapbook Update – could these patterns possibly be part of the new product or product line that’s currently in the works?

A January 2012 release date seems to indicate that whatever Heidi’s latest project is could be debuted at the CHA Winter 2012 show in Anaheim, CA. Scrapbook Update will be keeping a close eye on this development and will, as always, keep our readers up to date on the latest news.

House of 3 has decided to say goodbye since one of its co-founders has departed.

In a move that surprised most in the scrapbooking world, House of 3 announced via their blog Monday that they are shutting down the popular scrapbook design collaboration.

House of 3 was founded in 2009 by Janet Hopkins, Heidi Swapp and Rhonna Farrer. The company originally sold only digital products through their website. At CHA Summer 2010, House of 3 expanded into paper production when it launched a licensed line of products with Pink Paislee. House of 3 has produced three total collections with Pink Paislee: Parisian Anthology launched at CHA Summer 2010, and Daily Junque & Soiree launched at CHA Winter 2011.

Co-founder Rhonna Farrer had already announced on her blog three weeks ago that she was departing House of 3. Following her departure, the remaining co-founders decided not to continue House of 3, resulting in Monday’s announcement.

The House of 3 website will be available through May 31st, 2011 so that the company’s digital customers may secure all of their purchased downloads. Their digital store will be holding a 50% off sale through May 8th so that House of 3 fans may make last-minute purchases before the company’s digital products are retired from public sale.

Paper forms of House of 3 products will continue to be available from Pink Paislee through 2o12. House of 3 designer Rhonna Farrer told Scrapbook Update that House of 3′s Pink Paislee released lines moving forward will be already created designs previously available only in digital from House of 3.
