Michaels Gets Gypsy For 30 Days

Michaels announced last week that they will be selling the Provo Craft Gypsy exclusively starting on October 4th. They began taking pre-orders for the device last weekend, and the pre-orders will be delivered in late September according to what a representative for Michaels told Scrapbook Update.

Of course, the big question for both consumers and other retailers is how long the device will be exclusive to Michaels for. October is already creeping into the start of the holiday shopping season, and Michaels would be unlikely to discount much for the holidays on a hot product that they had an exclusive distribution deal on. And of course other retailers are going to want a chance to capture a part of the holiday market for the buzzed-about device for Provo Craft’s popular Cricut (also a popular holiday item).

According to a statement issued to Scrapbook Update by a representative for Provo Craft, the Gypsy will be exclusive to Michaels for only 30 days and will be available in other stores starting the 2nd week of November. This means that it should be widely available at other retailers before the official start of the holiday shopping season at Thanksgiving. It will be interesting to see if there is a Gypsy sale war on Black Friday the weekend of Thanksgiving since it would be expected to be a hot seller for the holidays.

Of course, even the 30 day exclusive deal on the Gypsy release for Michaels is a blow to other scrapbook retailers since it will soak up the first frantic buying frenzy for the product.

Michaels & Provo Craft News Briefs

For Friday, here’s a couple news briefs related to Michaels and Provo Craft:

Michaels to hold Back-To-School event

Michaels will be holding a back-to-school event in all of its stores tomorrow (Saturday, August 15th) from 10am-1pm. Kids from age 5 to age 12 are invited (while supplies last) to decorate metal pencil boxes to help them prepare for the return to the classroom this fall.

Home Depot Gets The Cricut

Yet another big box store is getting the Cricut – only this time it’s not a crafts store. Home Depot has started to carry the Cricut Expression Home Decor Bundle and a selection of accessories for it on their website. The focus of the store’s offerings is on the machine’s wall decor capabilities, with a variety of colors of vinyls and the cartridge selection mostly alphabets.

Michaels Gets Exclusive On Gypsy

Customers who are waiting anxiously to get their hands on Provo Craft’s new Gypsy tool for the Cricut machine are going to need to look at Michaels for it. According to Michaels, it will be available exclusively in their stores starting on October 4th. Michaels stores will begin taking pre-orders for the tool tomorrow (Saturday, August 15th). Scrapbook Update is waiting for word from Michaels on how long the tool will be exclusive to them, and will update the story when that information is received.

Scrapbook Update CHA-Summer 2009 Top 10 Hot Picks

I came, I saw, I photographed. I asked questions. I listened to what other people were talking about on the show floor. After weighing all of that, here (in no particular order) is the Scrapbook Update list of Top 10 Hot Picks from CHA-Summer 2009.

1. Toy Story 3D Papers by Sandylion

Sandylion has a new line of licensed papers coming out to coincide with the release of the new Toy Story 3D movie later this year. There are two noteworthy things about this line. First, they will be exclusive to local retailers for the first three months. But what makes them really cool is that the papers are designed to appear to be 3D when used with the 3D glasses that will be distributed for viewing the movie. Yet when viewed without the glasses, the papers look perfectly fine. Between the popularity of the Toy Story license, and the 3D gimmick, expect these papers to be extremely popular!

2. Pink Paislee

At each show, there is usually one or two companies that absolutely nail their entire collection. This time, one of those companies was Pink Paislee. Vintage is hot and they interpreted it perfectly for the holidays that buyers were looking for at CHA-Summer (Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day). Their embellishments and their papers are both gorgeous, a rare feat in a collection.

3. Provo Craft Cricut Gypsy

The Cricut is the dominant force in the electronic die cutting market, and this new portable gadget (available in October) is causing a lot of buzz. The Gypsy will let Cricut users carry their entire cartridge library with them on one portable device, great for carrying to a friend’s house for a crop, and also let them plan and create cuts while they are away from their machine. There is a lot of future potential for functionality in this device. (Watch for a future Scrapbook Update article with details on the Gypsy and its possible future.) Cricut devotees will likely love this new gadget.

4. Jillibean Soup Corrugated Alphabet

Corrugated is a popular look with fans of kraft paper, and Jillibean Soup is going to make them very happy with their new kraft Corrugated Alphabet. The alphabet comes in a single lowercase font as a die cut sheet that contains multiples of the most popular letters.

5.  Prima

Here’s another company at CHA-Summer 2009 that hit a home run with its entire new release. There is something for everyone in the new Prima introductions: bling, pearls, fabric, florals, and papers. There is even a new budget-friendly line called “e.” that wholesales for only $.75/pkg.  Whether you are vintage or graphic in style, something here will appeal to you.

6. Jenni Bowlin Chipboard Buttons

Once again, Jenni Bowlin makes an appearance on the CHA Top 10 Hot Picks list. This time it is for her beautiful (and trend-conscious) chipboard button embellishments. They are simple to use, can lay more flat than real buttons, and the decorative designs on them make them an extra special element on a page, card or tag.

7. Mudd Puddles

Texture is hot. Mudd Puddles are a sand texture suspended in a glue mixture that can be spread on a surface, creating the appearance of the surface being coated in sand when the glue dries. It comes in about a couple dozen colors, mostly natural sand colors but also a few colors like blue and pink. Mudd Puddles created a lot of buzz on the CHA show floor, and at the Supershow on Friday, seemed to be a hit with consumers who were buying it as well.

8. Quickutz Lifestyle Letterpress

Quickutz is selling its latest tool under a new brand name called Lifestyle to broaden the reach of the brand outside the scrapbook market. The Letterpress tool is an accessory for the new Epic 6 die cutting machine which uses ink and embossing folders to print letterpress designs and type on high-quality paper. The company is selling a line of inks and cotton paper as well as the tool and the printing plates. Designs are available to create all sorts of social stationary such as cards, letterhead, invitations, and place cards. After printing, the back of the designs are actually raised off the the paper, just like in traditional letterpress printing.

9. Ali Edwards for Technique Tuesday

This is the only repeat on the hot picks list from CHA-Winter, but it is a well-deserved one. Ali continues to demonstrate that she has a magic touch for usable product design with her new stamp releases from Technique Tuesday at CHA-Summer. Fans of Ali’s style (and there are legions of them) will fall in love with this release. I have no doubt that these stamps will be as successful as her earlier efforts for Technique Tuesday have been.

10. Domestic Goddess by Graphic 45

Kitchen themes and vintage were both big on the CHA-Summer show floor. Graphic 45 combined these beautifully in its Domestic Goddess line. It actually goes beyond just a kitchen theme and includes tributes to other domestic arts practiced by women of the 1930′s and 1940′s. And like everything Graphic 45, the colors are rich and deep and the designs are true vintage.

Provo Craft Says Gypsy Doesn’t Erase Cartridges

A public relations representative acting on behalf of Provo Craft has issued the following statement to Scrapbook Update about the question of whether being loaded onto the upcoming Gypsy electronic device erases Cricut cartridges:

Many have speculated that using a cartridge with Gypsy will wipe the content from the Cricut Cartridge. This is not the case. Users that buy Gypsy will be able to use any of their cartridges with their Gypsy OR any Cricut machine.

This statement clearly conflicts with the impression that was left with the focus group that was used for the product, and also with what at least one person was told by Provo Craft’s customer service today.

Provo Craft is apparently continuing to adhere to their marketing plan for the release of the Gypsy, which calls for the machine to not be actually “revealed” until the 27th, and thus are declining to release any concrete details about the operation of the machine to put to rest customer questions about this issue.

ProvoCraft Unleashes Viral Marketing Campaign For Cricut Gypsy

Provo Craft has been building a lot of mystery surrounding the new Cricut accessory that is being unveiled at CHA-Summer.  First they set up a website with hints to the tool’s capabilities on it, along with a countdown to its unveiling. Now, they’ve gone all out with a social media campaign that I believe may be unlike anything ever seen in the scrapbook industry.

The website has now been expanded to host embedded YouTube videos that show the quest of bounty hunter Donnie K. to retrieve 10 test units that weren’t returned. The videos, also available on the RogueGypsies YouTube Channel, are pretty unusual for the scrapbook industry. Check out the example below:

Donnie K. also has his own Twitter account, Facebook page, and Flickr account.

Provo Craft is hitting all the marks on a textbook social media campaign that is designed to go viral, and it seems to be working.

So what is the Gypsy?

According to the RogueGypsies.com website, here are its vital statistics:

Features:

  • Size – 8” x 3” x 1.5”
  • Weight – 11 ounces
  • Screen Size – 4.7”, 16:9, 480 x 272
  • Stylus Length – 3.75”
  • Storage – ~4000 Cartridges, 10000+ Designs
  • Battery Life – 4 hrs cont. 18 hrs int.
  • Compatible with all Cricut Machines and Cartridges
  • Weld, size, slant, rotate, stretch, preview
  • 2 Full content cartridges preloaded

Benefits:

  • No computer required
  • All CDS functionality on-the-go with no PC
  • Interfaces with CDS when connected to a PC
  • Stores All Content
  • Stores All Overlays
  • Stores All Manuals
  • Stores CDS Projects

Joy Tracey, author of the Obsessed With Scrapbooking blog, was part of a focus group about the device. She’s indicating in her blog post about the Gypsy that it stores all of the contents of the user’s Cricut cartridges.

Word around the internet has it that the cartridges may be erased when their contents are loaded onto the Gypsy (obviously PC would want to do this to prevent sharing and duplicating of cartridges, which would run rampant otherwise). If this is true, this makes the computer geek in me nervous, because electronic devices can be damaged, crash, or have their memory die. Any computer owner knows they have to protect their valuable data by backing up their hard drive regularly. I wonder what protections would be in place for future Gypsy owners should a device possibly holding hundreds, even thousands, of dollars of cartridges fail. Would there be a back-up system, or a way to reclaim the cartridges? It’s one thing to have a single cartridge die – it’s another thing to lose your whole collection due to a hardware failure.

UpdatePlease see Scrapbook Update’s follow-up article for a statement from Provo Craft on the issue of whether the Gypsy renders Cricut cartridges inoperable.
