CHA Summer 2012: Celebrity Spotting

Since it was my first CHA show, I was excited to get the chance to meet some of my favorite celebrity scrapbookers in person.

The first booth I stopped at was the display for American Crafts’ Amy Tangerine line, and Amy Tan graciously agreed to pose with her awesome wall art.

Trends | Coral

Coral was without a doubt one of the hottest color trends on the show floor at CHA Winter 2012. Existing somewhere between the 2011 Pantone color of the year, Honeysuckle, and Pantone’s 2012 pick of Tangerine Tango, shades of coral run the gamut from vibrant pinks to sultry oranges. A quick Google Image search for “coral color” turned up this spectrum of shades, showing just a few of coral’s many faces.

With versatility like this, it’s no wonder that coral made an appearance in one form or another in almost every paper manufacturer’s booth on the CHA show floor. In fact, the color was so popular that I had to narrow down the list of collections to feature here to those that prominently used coral in their color scheme. In reality, there were many more lines that I could have shared that used coral as an accent color, but the range of images and styles shown here should give you a pretty good taste of what’s to come (and is in some cases already available!) from the new crop of collections.

Die Cuts with a View (also known as DCWV) made the color the focus of one of their newest paper stacks. Coral Couture pairs both the orange and pink versions of coral with aqua and yellow to create a sophisticated color palette. The addition of large floral and butterfly motifs give the line a vintage feel. For more on this line, you can visit my blog here, where I spotlight this new paper stack, and May Flaum also took it for a test drive in a post on her blog.

Trend | Mason Jars

Mason jars have become a hot trend for weddings as both glasses to hold drinks and vases for flowers. They are popping up in stores like Anthropologie as snow globes, seen for so many uses around trendy blogs and websites, and now we are seeing them enter the scrapbooking world. At CHA this week, several companies featured new releases with Mason jars and today I will take a closer look at this emerging trend.

In the Dear Lizzy line at American Crafts, Mason jars can be found on her paper, stickers, and a stamp as well as in the booth decor.

Noteworthy | 10.14

This week has been filled with an awesome selection of tutorials and videos across crafting blogs and I have picked out my favorites of a very great week to share with you in this week’s Noteworthy column:

Have a few minutes and want a good scrapbook-related laugh? You need to check out the on-line scrapbook community’s newest sensation: Cleetus McDuffy. Just yesterday his third ”Get Crafty with Cleetus” video was released on you tube. Who is Cleetus?

I’m an Arsty-Fartsy Scrapbookun and Crafting Addict. I LUV CATHY Z!! GIT SUM!! Host of Get Crafty with Cleetus scrapbookun show.

Collin Kartchner (husband of well known scrapbooker Elizabeth Kartchner) is the man behind the Cathy Z-loving, Shasta Drinking, former tilt-a-whirl operating phenomenon that is Cleetus. I can only hope the videos will be more frequent in the future! In the meantime, he can be found on twitter as well as facebook. [Read more...]

Trend Watch: Falling Down The Rabbit Hole?

Ever since Tim Burton came out with his version of Alice & Wonderland, I’ve seen an increase in product related to or inspired by the classic tale – and not just in the Disney store. Just this week I saw (via facebook) that Priscilla Dawn, an etsy shop, will have an Alice-inspired dress for custom order next month. Then I saw American Crafts’ reveal of the new Dear Lizzy line “Enchanted” (pictured below) and my brain started spinning.

For more images and information on this line visit the source of these images – the American Crafts blog.

These three items I’ve shown are just a few of my favorites – I find the whole line to be very cool and I predict another run-away success for Elizabeth Kartchner and American Crafts. It’s a fun twist on the butterfly and flower products that are so common in the industry, and I really love the funky color palette.

I’ve also noticed the details of Cosmo Cricket’s Pixie-Licious line that they revealed recently on their blog. I see a lot of flowers with faces, as well as mushrooms, and caterpillars too. Will there be more caterpillars alongside butterflies now? More mushrooms with flowers? This Pixie-licious line is an interesting offering for sure.

It makes me wonder – will big flowers, tea cups, white rabbit, queen of heart and mad hatter tea party inspired product be the next big thing? Will we see a number of companies jump “down the rabbit hole”? With many CHA reveals still to come, I have no way to know – but I am surprised to find how much I hope there is a big push in this direction.

I like the realm of possibility it holds, and I am hoping for some funky new goodies to add to my must-buy list beyond the lines above.
