Graphic 45 | It’s Your Day

spellbinders-winter-2013-cha-dies-card-13-1

Designer Yana Smakula is here today to show off some fabulous Graphic45 from their Secret Garden collection!

The beautiful intricate pattern of the lavender paper makes the large expanse of pattern appear lush and full, instead of feeling like white space since the paper is the only element. The curving arc across the top of the patterned paper – cut with a Spellbinders A2 Curved Borders One die –  is the perfect soft way to top the block of pattern off. A straight line would have been too harsh and graphic to match well with the other design elements.

This card also has a design element that could serve double duty. The seed packet cards are tucked into a pocket created behind the patterned paper element – that pocket could also serve to hold a gift like a gift card or tickets.

Technique Tuesday | Thinking of You

spellbinders-winter-2013-cha-dies-card-15-1

Welcome back to Technique Tuesday week on Card Annex! Thanks for joining us as we feature the latest product releases from Technique Tuesday at CHA Winter 2013!

Designer Yana Smakula brings us a card that is a great reminder to remember to make use of those sentiments that are often “add on” elements in a stamp set. We often forget they are there, but they can be the primary reason to reach for a stamp set if you remember that they are there! This sentiment is from the new “Wildflowers” stamp set:

Technique-Tuesday-Wildflowers

The sentiment is slightly small for the die cut that Yana wanted to use it on, so she added pearls on either side of it to both fill the space and highlight the text.

Clean-&-Simple-Die-Cutting-Card-3-3

Have you ever considered using a layout as inspiration for a card? Designer Yana Smakula’s card was inspired by this layout by Kelly Goree!

Clean-&-Simple-Die-Cutting-Card-3-4

This quick and easy card features a wonderful die set from Spellbinders and Becky Fleck called Say What?.

Clean-&-Simple-Die-Cutting-Card-3-5

By adhering the speech bubbles using different heights – 1mm and 2mm foam dots –  of dimensional adhesive, as well as leaving some flat, it created more depth and interest on the card.

My Valentine

spellbinders-winter-2013-cha-dies-card-1-6

Doesn’t the texture on this card make you just want to reach out and run your fingers over it? Designer Yana Smakula used a brand-new-not-yet-available-in-stores M-Bossabilities embossing folder from Spellbinders called “Dotted Flower” to create this beautifully embossed background. Even without any color added to it, the texture is so stunning that it provides plenty of interest to the eye.

With the opulent texture on the card, only a few light touches are needed to decorate it. Yana choose another brand new Spellbinders product, this time one of their new Shapeabilities dies, to create a label frame to anchor her sentiment sticker and heart embellishment with. A few light touches of pink in the floss and pearls some on pins) are all that is needed to finish this off!

Sometimes less is more in card design, especially when you have a strong element like the embossed background on this one. Elements like this should be highlighted, no buried!

Be Mine Forever

Be My Valentine

A tag with a hole in it needs some kind of fiber to look finished, but then we can be left wondering what to “do” with the hanging fiber. Sharon Callis solved that dilemma very creatively on her beautiful monochromatic valentine’s card!

Sharon used the fiber from the tag to echo the swirl designs in her patterned paper. She also did the same with a piece of craft wire, and some rhinestone embellishments, adding a wide variety of texture to the design.

This card also shows how scraps left over from larger projects can be assembled into lovely cards. There are a lot of embellishments used on this card, but only small quantities used of any of them. These are the sort of leftovers that we often have from other projects – one last brad, half a piece of bling. Next time you finish up a scrapbook project, look around your table at your scraps before you put them away. Can you whip a quick card up out of the already coordinated items in front of you, some of which may even be headed for the trash?

Supplies | Patterned Paper: Trimcraft (Love Letters stack). Adhesive: Xyron (Mega Runner), Foam (unknown). Fibres: docrafts. Embellishments: Dovecraft (adhesive gems), We R Memory Keepers (Spring Designer Gromlets). Wire: Unknown.
