Update | Core’dinations, Tim Holtz, Miniatures, Jobs, and More!

The holidays are over…and that means that trade show season is upon us! January will bring us both the brand new Creativation show from CHA, and the Creativeworld tradeshow in Frankfurt. Of course, trade show time brings lots of news too…and even though the month has just begun, the news wires are already starting to heat up! Let’s get started!

Endings. Tim Holtz has announced on his blog that he will no longer be doing the immensely popular “12 tags” series. The series has been running for an astounding ten years. The first five years it was “The 12 Tags of Christmas”, and then in 2012 it was reinvented as a monthly series. The tag has become Tim’s signature piece in trade show demonstrations. (Pictured above: me with my special “grunge free” tag that Tim made for me at CHA.)

Exhibits. Miniatures are getting hot in the crafts industry! If you are interested in seeing handmade, artisan miniatures, the Houston Center for Contemporary Art has an exhibit called “Pocket Museum” opening on January 20th. Running through March 18th, the exhibit features the work of miniature artists Jon Almeda, Althea Crome, Sean Donlon, Nash Quinn, and Marco Terenzi. Miniatures created in ceramic, fiber, glass, metal, and wood will be on display.

Acquisitons. American Crafts has announced that it has acquired cardstock company Core’dinations, which was previously owned by Darice. In February 2016, Darice became a subsidiary of Michaels Stores when Darice’s parent company Lamrite West was purchased by Michaels. American Crafts already has multiple cardstock brands under its umbrella, having acquired Bazzill in 2014 and also selling cardstock under its American Crafts brand. The company will continue to use the Core’dinations brand after the acquisition but as part of the transition many of the brand’s products have been discontinued, including the Tim Holtz branded Kraft Core line.

Teams. A new year means new creative teams at many companies, and the announcements are rolling in! Becky Higgins has announced new paper and digital teams, Neat & Tangled has also announced a new design team for 2017, an Instagram team, as well as a video team.

Jobs. Does your New Year’s Resolution include a new job? The following industry jobs are currently listed as available:

SNAP Conference 2016: My First Blogging Conference

Somehow, with all of the travel that I have done for my work running my websites in the past few years, the one thing that I hadn’t done was attend one of the major national blog conferences. I had attended local events like WordCamp here in Florida, but hadn’t traveled further afield for one.

I finally crossed “attend blog conference” off of my list last week when I attended the 2016 SNAP Conference  for creative bloggers in Salt Lake City. For those unfamiliar with it, SNAP Conference is a three day annual event based in Salt Lake City that serves home, craft, and DIY bloggers. The event provides networking, education, and opportunities to connect with sponsors.

Delta Flight Information

My journey to SNAP started with a 4am drive to Daytona Beach International airport to catch a 6am flight to Atlanta. I love Daytona Beach airport – it’s only a half hour away from my house and easy to use because it is tiny. It’s so tiny, in fact, that when I checked in for my trip to SNAP, the check-in agent handed me my boarding pass and said, “Your flight is at gate 2.” I told him, “You could have just said go to the gate with the plane at it.” He laughed and told me I was right. Once, I arrived a bit too early for my flight and spent quite awhile as the lone passenger in the secure area of the terminal, with only the airport’s police officer and the gift store clerk for company. Michaels Buying Darice Parent Lamrite West

The Michaels Companies, Inc. announced on February 2nd that it had purchased Lamrite West, Inc. for $150 million dollars.

Lamrite West was founded in 1954 by the Catanzarite family, and remained privately held until the acquisition by Michaels Companies. The current CEO, Michael Catanzarite, was the son of company founder Pat Catanzarite. According to the announcement, Michael Catanzarite will continue as CEO of Lamrite West post-acquisition and will serve on the Michaels executive committee. Lamrite West will continue to operate out of its Ohio headquarters as “a distinct business within Michael’s” according to Michaels Companies’ press statement on the acquisition.

Youngsville, Ohio-based Lamrite West operates a 34 store craft chain in the Midwest named Pat Catan’s. There are Pat Catan’s stores in four states: Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Continue Reading →

News From CHA Winter 2010

Here’s a news round-up of stories that came to Scrapbook Update’s attention at CHA-Winter 2010 in Anaheim:

Queen & Co. Halts Shipping of Disney Print Paper

Prior to CHA, Queen & Co. showed a sneak peek of a collection called Magic Memories that was designed to be used for Disney scrapbooking. One of the prints, the white background one in the photo below, featured interlinked circles that were obviously a mouse ear pattern:

Disney is notoriously protective of its trademarks such as its Mickey ears logo. After receiving questions from multiple potential buyers about whether they were on questionable legal ground, Queen & Co. is opting not to ship that paper design to err on the side of caution. The rest of the papers in the collection will ship as scheduled.

Darice Acquires Core’dinations

Effective January 22nd, cardstock company Core’dinations has been acquired by Strongsville, Ohio-based Darice. Almost two years old, Core’dinations made a big splash at CHA Winter with its embossed cardstock collection packs that coordinate with collections by companies like Jenni Bowlin and Cosmo Cricket. The core of Core’dinations cardstock is a different color than its surface, creating interesting effects when sanding or embossing it.

Anthony Grinnell, Core’dinations director, said “Our business has seen tremendous growth since it’s inception in February of 2008. We will be able to accelerate that growth as we join with Darice and their extensive line of paper-crafting products.”

“Bringing Core’dinations product lines into the Darice family of products allows us to provide the most comprehensive and highest quality paper-crafting assortment for our retailer customers” said Mike Birkholm, Darice’s president. “Additionally, we are pleased that Anthony will continue to provide creative and strategic direction for this great line of products.”

Darice was founded in 1954, and is most widely known for its non-scrapbooking crafts products in areas such as jewelry making, kids crafts, and floral design.

EK Success Goes Peanuts

Charlie Brown and the gang are coming to EK Success. They have acquired the licensing rights to create products featuring the popular characters. A few products are coming in the CHA releases, and a few sneak peeks of Halloween products were on display in the CHA-Winter booth as well.

CHA 2011 Dates Conflict With Paperworld 2011

The schedule that has been announced by CHA for the 2011 show in Los Angeles – Jan. 29th through Feb. 1st – is exactly the same as the dates for the Paperworld 2011 show in Frankfurt, Germany. Paperworld is the world’s leading trade fair for the paper, stationery and office supplies market. Many scrapbook industry companies have ties to it.

Craft Critique Sponsoring Event for Professional Crafters

Craft Critique announced they are sponsoring an event for professional crafters in Chicago, on Oct. 21-23, 2010. Few details are currently available but you can sign up to receive future updates at the Crafty Con website.

Creativity Inc. Discontinuing Scrapbook Products

After offering only limited introductions at CHA-Summer 2009 in Orlando, Creativity Inc. is shelving its scrapbook product lines. The parent company of Westrim, Crop-in-Style, Autumn Leaves and Foof-a-La had its booth in the General Crafts section in Anaheim, and had only a small display of clearance merchandise that was scrapbook-related.

Mudd Puddles Picked Up By Creative Imaginations

Mudd Puddles, one of Scrapbook Update’s CHA-Summer 2009 Hot Picks, is no longer being produced independently by creator Dave Felber. The announcement was made at CHA-Winter in Anaheim that Mudd Puddles is now part of the Creative Imaginations line of products. The product, a great fit at Creative Imaginations due to their affinity for doing beach-themed products, is now limited to just 10 colors.
