Trend | Mason Jars

Mason jars have become a hot trend for weddings as both glasses to hold drinks and vases for flowers. They are popping up in stores like Anthropologie as snow globes, seen for so many uses around trendy blogs and websites, and now we are seeing them enter the scrapbooking world. At CHA this week, several companies featured new releases with Mason jars and today I will take a closer look at this emerging trend.

In the Dear Lizzy line at American Crafts, Mason jars can be found on her paper, stickers, and a stamp as well as in the booth decor.

Valentine’s Day Scrapbooking Paper Lines Roundup

The scrapbooking world is emerging from a barrage of Christmas projects just in time to start crafting for the next holiday: Valentine’s Day! Believe it or not, it’s time to start thinking about what paper line(s) you’re going to use for your Valentine’s Day cards, since the big day of all things pink, hearted, and mushy is a mere six weeks away! Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to shop for your supplies and make your cards without feeling rushed.

After my roundup of Christmas scrapbooking lines went live here on Scrapbook Update, I received many, many requests to do a similar article for each holiday. I can’t promise that I’ll do one for every special day on the calendar (there just aren’t that many paper lines for Talk Like a Pirate Day, you know?), but when there are enough themed lines to warrant a roundup, I’ll be sure to post them to keep you all informed!

As with the Christmas roundup, I’m listing all the Valentine’s Day paper lines that were released either at or after CHA Summer 2011 and have scoured the vastness of the interwebs to bring you representative photos of each. They’re listed in alphabetical order, and, since there aren’t nearly so many of them as there were Christmas lines, I’ll also give a little commentary on each.

Ready to start seeing pink? Let’s get going!

Basic GreyKissing Booth

Kissing Booth is a mix of basic patterns (I spy doilies and herringbone in the mix) and sweet watercolor images. This line uses brown as a contrast color and is one of the few cream-based collections in the roundup.

Kit | Merry and Bright by Melissa

We’re getting into the Christmas spirit a bit early here at Scrapbook Update! This month’s Scrapbook Update kit, Merry and Bright, is filled to the brim with festive colors and motifs that will be perfect for scrapping all your winter and Christmas memories. In fact, I designed this kit to be used for either layouts or for a December Daily or Journal Your Christmas mini album. There are enough papers, alphabets, and sparkly baubles in this kit to keep you scrapping all December long, and while a few of the items are strictly Christmas themed, I kept the majority of the kit generic enough to be used for a variety of subjects.

The papers are a selection of Crate Paper Peppermint, Echo Park Season’s Greetings, and Studio Calico Classic Calico that blend bright pops of seasonal colors with sophisticated grays and grounding woodgrains for a fun, cozy feel.

Speaking of the papers, the main kit photo above only tells half the story about them as all of these sheets have lovely prints on their B-sides, as well. Continue Reading →

Trend Watch | Shades of Orange

From persimmon to peach, marmalade to mandarin…there’s a color that is not normally seen in my craft space that is invading my studio. That color is orange! In many shades, in various forms, this color I usually don’t play well with is not only invading the craft stores, it’s also working really well on my pages too!

While this is the usual time of year for shades of orange to make a cameo in my fall seasonal projects, this year it’s more than that. Paired with aqua, pink, grey, green, blue, and many more colors, I’m finding orange to be the perfect accent. Here are some of my favorite basics in orange:

Above: American Crafts “Nightfall” Thickers (Elm – Rust),  Core’dinations Tim Holtz Distress cardstock (Wild Honey),  Tim Holtz Distress Ink (Spiced Marmalade), Studio Calico Mr. Huey’s mist (Custard), Ranger Perfect Pearls mist (Mandarin).

Where is orange showing up in hot new product lines? Here are a few noteable places it has popped up: Continue Reading →

Kit | Autumn Sunlight

Every year I find myself trying to hold on to every last scrap of summer while at the same time easing into fall, and this month’s kit at Scrapbook Update, Autumn Sunlight, was inspired by the bright, fun, happy times that are experienced when trying to cram every conceivable warm-weather excursion into a single month before chilly temperatures prevail.

I chose sunny yellow and deep turquoise as base colors, then built on those with pops of coral using some of the latest papers from My Mind’s Eye, Echo Park, Crate Paper, and Cosmo Cricket for a kit that’s part summer and part fall, making it useful for so many different layout themes. Noteworthy | 10.14

This week has been filled with an awesome selection of tutorials and videos across crafting blogs and I have picked out my favorites of a very great week to share with you in this week’s Noteworthy column:

Have a few minutes and want a good scrapbook-related laugh? You need to check out the on-line scrapbook community’s newest sensation: Cleetus McDuffy. Just yesterday his third “Get Crafty with Cleetus” video was released on you tube. Who is Cleetus?

I’m an Arsty-Fartsy Scrapbookun and Crafting Addict. I LUV CATHY Z!! GIT SUM!! Host of Get Crafty with Cleetus scrapbookun show.

Collin Kartchner (husband of well known scrapbooker Elizabeth Kartchner) is the man behind the Cathy Z-loving, Shasta Drinking, former tilt-a-whirl operating phenomenon that is Cleetus. I can only hope the videos will be more frequent in the future! In the meantime, he can be found on twitter as well as facebook. Continue Reading →
