CHA PaperArts Show: An Overview

With the demise of the long-running CHA Summer show in Chicago (which was transplanted to Las Vegas last year for its last iteration), the CHA PaperArts section needed a new show to promote and sell its critical third and fourth quarter holiday releases. Thus, the CHA PaperArts show was born!

The Venue

The new show was a completely re-imagined experience from the former summer show. The CHA PaperArts show was designed as a hotel-based show, with all events taking place under the roof of the Hilton Atlanta. The high-rise hotel sits in the heart of downtown Atlanta, in the neighborhood surrounding Olympic Park. From my room on the 13th floor, the view spread expansively across I-75, which was only a block away, to the Emory University building and other downtown highrises.

How about some summer sneak peeks?

Summer-Releases-2014-Art-02This time of year we’re used to seeing the flood of CHA sneak peeks starting, bringing us tantalizing looks at all of the great products that will be filling stores in the second half of the year. This year, of course, there is no “CHA Summer” show as we have known it for the past few decades. The traditional Rosemont show is history, a casualty of declining markets and budgets and the rising cost of travel.

In its place have risen two shows – a CHA PaperArts show in Atlanta and an SPC show in Salt Lake – that will attempt to fill the void. So, this year, there will be no “CHA Sneak Peeks” – instead we have a “Summer Sneak Peeks” page to encompass both shows and the non-exhibiting companies. (If your company has an announcement to share, please use the form on the Sneak Peeks Page to submit it!)

On our new sneak peeks page, you’ll find product announcements from Memorial Day to the end of July, linked so you can go view all the details.  And just like on past sneak peeks pages, this page again has the ability to sort by company or date added so that you can view the announcements arranged how you want to see them.

And of course, this time period usually includes the product announcements for arguably the two biggest holidays on the scrapbook industry calendar these days: Christmas and Halloween. So, to make things easier for our readers who are interested in those holidays, we are adding those peeks to two pages: the general peeks page, and to special holiday pages that we will be making public shortly – one for the Christmas lines, and one for the Halloween lines. Those pages will continue to be updated with new releases after July 31st, when the regular sneaks page will close, to ensure that they include all 2014 holiday themed lines. So watch for our special holiday release pages coming soon!

But in the meantime, you can check out the Summer Sneak Peeks page starting right now! We hope you like it!

Update | 5.8.2014: Fedex, October Afternoon, Sakura, CHA PaperArts

Tonight is the annual NFL draft – a very scrapworthy moment if there ever was one for some proud football moms! Combined with today’s annual “Day in the Life” project by Ali Edwards, which encourages scrapbookers to record the normal everyday things about their lives, the two events make a good reminder of the importance of recording not just the victories, but everyday battles in our lives, and even the defeats.

Fedex has announced that effective January 1st, they are reworking the pricing structure on Fedex Ground. Previously, shipping on Ground packages below 3 cubic feet in volume was charged based solely on weight. After January 1st, the company will be going completely to “dimensional weight” pricing, where packages are charged based on a combination of their weight and volume.

This pricing change is being put into effect to combat e-retailers’ habits of selling large lightweight items with free shipping, or packing items in boxes that are way too large for the item and then filling the rest of the box with air pillows or other packaging. These low density, high volume packages result in lower profits for the carrier because they take up large amounts of space without generating equivalent revenue. The new rate structure is in effect a rate increase for anyone selling large relatively lightweight items and shipping them via Fedex Ground: yarn, batting, embellishments, albums, adhesive refills, to name a few. Events | CHA PaperArts 2014 Atlanta [Details]

The Craft & Hobby Association held two webinars last week to share the details of their planned PaperArts show in Atlanta in July with members. What follows are the details of the show as shared with members in the two webinars.

The show is designed to fill the void for the scrapbooking market that was left when the CHA Summer show was discontinued, to give them a marketplace and promotional opportunity for the all-important holiday products released in the second half of the calendar year.

CHA PaperArts 2014 is scheduled to take place from July 29th-31st, 2014 at the Hilton Atlanta in Atlanta, Georgia. July 29th is a workshop day, with the exhibit floor being open on the 30th and 31st.

Hilton Atlanta During the webinars, CHA staff members stressed that plans for the hotel-based show will be very different from the previous CHA convention center shows. They repeatedly described the event as “casual” and stressed that the event will be focused on transactional and product education events – a “buying and learning” show. There will be no business seminars – all education events will be hands-on workshops. Continue Reading →
