CHA Mega Show 2014 | A First Time Perspective

What was the CHA Mega Show 2014 in Anaheim, California like for a guy who is not a crafter? Amazing actually. Let me tell you my story.

First, in the briefest of autobiographies, my name is Mike Nally and I’ve been married to Scrapbook Update’s editor Nancy Nally for over 20 years. My career background is in business and technology. My creative background can most simply be described as “photographer and technology geek”.  The world of papers, adhesives, paints, and the like has always been a bit confusing and overwhelming for me.  But, now that I’m a full time member of the Nally Studios LLC team, we realized that I needed to increase my education about the space in which we do our work.  It was time for me to go to my first CHA Mega Show.

CHA Mega Show 2014 | Spellbinders Creativity Enhanced Workshop

I was lucky to get into one of the highly popular Spellbinders classes, Creativity Enhanced, on the first day of the conference at the CHA Mega Show 2014, which was held in Anaheim, California last month.

CHA-Winter-2014-Spellbinders-Class-0

We made four cards in class, and as always were able to take our projects to the next level with the help of fabulous Spellbinders dies and embossing folders. We were among the first who got to see the new Tool n’ One tool that makes removing negative die cut pieces of paper from your dies a quick and simple task. Continue Reading →

CHA Mega Show 2014 | Scrapbook Update Top Ten Hot Picks

It’s that time again – time to name the hottest brands from the CHA Mega Show 2014 in Anaheim last month!

This time around, several themes seemed to emerge as I assembled the list, themes that were evident in the show in general. Most notable perhaps was the large influx of truly quality new exhibitors, a group of which the show hasn’t seen like this in years. Another recurring theme, that was evident again and again on the show floor, was of companies who have remade themselves after challenges the past few years and are rising again creatively. Together, these two phenomena combined to lend an air of positivity and optimism to the show.

So, without further ado…here’s the Scrapbook Update Top Ten Hot Picks from the CHA Mega Show!

Brother Scan-n-Cut

Brother Scan-n-Cut

This machine has been taking the crafting world by storm in 2014, winning first the Innovations award at the CHA Mega Show and then Tool of the Year at Creativeworld in Frankfurt less than two weeks later. Scan-N-Cut enters a crowded, competitive market for digital diecutting that already featured at least four major competitors duking it out, but the machine’s unique ability to cut whatever it sees on a piece of paper is garnering it a closer look from crafters. CHA Mega Show | Silhouette America [+ a Promo too!]

Since I love my Portrait machine so much I’m always excited to see what Silhouette has new in their booth at CHA. Once again this time I wasn’t disappointed – the company had some really exciting new media that I can’t wait to try playing with!

Silhouette VellumVellum is really hot right now in paper crafting, and now there is vellum created just for cutting with Silhouette machines! There is also self-adhesive corrugated paper, great for creating die-cut textured shapes (like hearts and arrows) that are also popular at the moment. Continue Reading →
