World Card Making Day | Watercolor Thank You Card

Welcome to World Card Making Day on Scrapbook Update!

For many, today is about getting started on their Christmas greetings for the year. But it can also be a great chance to restock our stash of the cards we need throughout the year. Perhaps one of the most useful cards to have on hand is a thank you card!

Wondering where to start as you sit down to make cards today? This card was inspired by this pin by Jennifer McGuire. The concept is the same but I changed the design and used a totally different technique to achieve it. Pinterest is a great place to find inspiration for cards – I have boards for Cards, Christmas Cards, and Single Layer Cards.

Giveaway | Spellbinders Nestabilities

It’s time for another anniversary giveaway for Scrapbook Update’s readers!

This time the giveaway is a set of Spellbinders Nestabilities, the small Classic Squares set that cuts and embosses.

Spellbinders NestabilitiesYou might be thinking, “why would I want a square die cutting set when I can cut squares with my paper trimmer?” There’s a couple of reasons that die cutting squares has advantages. For one, it’s easier to get squares that are absolutely perfect and all exactly the same size – especially important if you are using them in a grid design together. Another advantage is that it is easier to place (or even center) a design in the middle of the square when you can place the die and then cut. Continue Reading →

Baby Cards with Simple Stories Hello Baby!

You may have noticed we are trying some new things at Scrapbook Update lately. Welcome to one of my favorite new features that I hope you’ll like: the card theme of the month! Throughout the month, you’ll see several articles containing cards built around the same theme. For the feature’s debut month, the theme is baby cards!

The brand new collection “Hello Baby” from Simple Stories is a perfect choice for making cards with. The 6 x 6 paper pad has great small patterns that are nicely scaled for card elements, and the chipboard and stickers offer great options to work with for embellishing.

My first card is a bit “shabby country”. The doily was inspired by one of the collection’s prints that uses a doily in it. The chicken wire stencil detail is an example of why I don’t stick things down right away. I had all of the elements – the doily, the title block, the chipboard word, the butterfly – arranged and was staring at the card. It needed something more, but not too much.

A stencil for some added texture on the wood paper seemed like just the right amount of detail, adding something visually without being too heavy. Using the stencil with some Distress Ink and the Ranger ink blending tool allowed me to fade out the edges of the design to soften it.

Love Cards with Fancy Pants Designs!

I had some card making fun recently with Fancy Pants’ “Be Loved” collection. This collection encompasses some of my favorite things creatively right now: tags, pink, blue, and gray (to name a few). And like it’s name suggests, it’s perfect for making love cards for your favorite person (and not just on Valentine’s Day!)

Using tags to make cards is one of my favorite shortcuts, and “Be Loved” has great tag sets with it that are perfect for cards. I couldn’t resist!
