Archiver’s Announces Memphis Store Closure

Archiver’s announced last week via their Facebook page that they are closing their Memphis, Tennessee, store location on March 3rd. The store was Archivers’ 41st store location and had been open since 2007.

Archiver’s currently has 44 stores in 18 states, as well as an online store, Archiver’s Annex.

The Archiver’s store in Memphis is located only a few miles away from the former location of Eclectica’s Scrapbook Garden, an extremely large scrapbook store that pre-dated Archivers’ presence in the area. Eclectica’s closed its doors just last October as well. The closure of both stores will now leave the Memphis area without a scrapbook retail store.

Archiver’s Pinterest Misstep Highlights Social Sharing Challenges

A minor brouhaha this week involving some Archiver’s stores’ use of content from Pinterest has once again highlighted some of the challenges for companies of navigating the internet’s social sharing websites and trends.

The story starts very simply: Archiver’s curates Pinterest boards that combine their own in-house content with content pinned from elsewhere. They apparently wanted to highlight their use of Pinterest to interact with their customers, and so they decided to encourage their stores to put their in-house Pinterest content on display in stores with an “As Seen On Pinterest” label on it. Sounds straightforward.

What actually happened was a bit different, however. Several high profile industry designers discovered that their work was on display in one of the stores, without their permission, with the Pinterest label on it.

Noteworthy | 9.16.2011

The big happening this week is in Minnesota, where there are more of the craft industry glitterati (and ink-eratti?) gathering to teach, work at, or attend Archiver’s ScrapFest than you’ll see outside CHA. In fact, ScrapFest may arguably be the biggest consumer craft event happening in the United States this year. If you’re in the area – watch for your favorite craft personalities. Between ScrapFest and The Creative Connection event, the Twin Cities are crawling with crafters and industry leaders!

For those of us not at this weekend’s event, we have plenty to be excited about and check out. Here are this week’s noteworthy stories:

Tim Holtz announced that he has worked with Ranger on releasing a limited edition set of seasonal distress inks. The set of three fall colors (ripe persimmon, gathered twigs, and seedless preserves) will be sold together as a stacked set. [Read more...]

Archiver’s Opens Online Store

Papercrafting superstore chain Archivers announced last week that they have opened an online version of their store, leaving Michaels as the only major craft/scrapbooking chain without an online sales presence.

The new e-store is named Archiver’s Annex and located at a separate URL from the main Archiver’s website (although the two sites are linked together). It is open for business and offering a wide selection of paper crafting products. Standard shipping starts at $6.95 for orders up to $19.99. The store does not accept Archiver’s store gift cards or honor coupons or sales from the Archiver’s stores.

Archiver’s has over 40 stores in 18 U.S. states, most of which are clustered heavily in the Midwest.
