CHA Travel:

Here are a few tips to help in your travel preparations:

  • When selecting a hotel, you may want to visit not only the CHA website for information on amenities but the hotel’s own website. Many of the participating convention hotels have more complete information on their own sites.
  • Use Google Maps to evaluate and narrow down your choices. In addition to satellite view, Google Maps also has street view of most of the major streets around the Convention Center, so you can get a really good idea of what a hotel looks like at ground level, what access to it is like, and what is around it. This can help figure out what the drive or walk to the Convention Center might be like, or what is close by for meals.

Orlando Weather for July 27th-30th:

As a Florida resident myself (I live less than 2 hours outside Orlando), I can tell you that the heat and humidity are definitely brutal in Orlando in July. However, as long as you are indoors, you won’t notice the heat at all. In fact, you may find yourself with the opposite problem – being cold – since Floridians tend to compensate for the heat outside by turning down the temperature inside on our powerful air conditioning systems to downright polar temperatures.

If you are going to be outside (such as at the theme parks), you will want to wear light, breathable clothing, and be sure to drink plenty of fluids. UV exposure is extreme in the height of summer here – it is critical to wear plenty of high SPF sunscreen for outdoor activities even on a cloudy day. Fair skin especially can begin to burn in only a few minutes that time of year here. (I got sunburned on a cloudy day attending the rain-shortened Daytona 500 in February this year. Please take the Florida sun seriously.)

Another weather concern in Central Florida in July is afternoon thunderstorms. July is the 2nd wettest month of the year here (barely losing out to June for the wettest month title). The extreme afternoon heat and humidity will cook up thunderstorms in the mid to late afternoon on an almost daily basis. The good news is that these storms are brief (if intense) and are usually done by the afternoon drive-time. Convention attendees will likely be unbothered by them unless they hear the roof rattling periodically from an especially intense roll of thunder. For theme park goers, afternoon storms are a good reason to return to the hotel room for a refreshing break before heading out again for the evening (one of my family’s favorite tactics that is recommended in Bob Sehlinger’s The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World).
