Trending: Feathers (Part 3) – DIY Feathers!

This is Ashley again this feathery Friday, with the third installment in Trending Feathers. Today we are going to look at all of the amazing ways you can make your own feathers! Don’t forget, at the end of this DIY Feather Round-Up, there is a chance to enter for a great give-away!

When I first started looking at handmade feathers, I was amazed at the sheer artistry that goes into some of them. And I thought, there is seriously no way I can do this. But, the more I looked, the more I realized that for all of the artistry that goes into feathers (paper and real), that they are essentially quite basic. And then I thought, I can do basic.

As a simple shape, a feather is really just a somewhat curvy, kinda long and skinny type shape. As having pattern, it really just looks like there are lots of fine downward pointing lines running the length of the center spine. Basically: long + chevrons = feather. Then whatever else you want to add in is just details. A pointy bit at the bottom for the quill, maybe some texture up the sides for the notches that gives each feather its unique shape.

Trending: Feathers (Part 2)

It’s Ashley again, back with part two of Trending: Feathers! Last time, I covered the fantastic assortment of new scrapbooking products available with feather motifs. Today we are going to look at finding feather products outside of the scrapbook store and craft aisle.

First up is an item I haven’t seen embraced by the scrapbooking world yet (or, again)… feather metal charms! There is a huge selection available online through sources like independent Etsy shops, and I bet you could find them in person in jewelry and beading stores. Here are a few of my favorites I’ve seen recently:

Trending: Feathers

[Editor’s Note: With this post, we welcome the newest addition to our staff, Ashley Calder! Ashley will be a familiar face to many of our readers, as her writing and creative work has been widely published in print and online in the scrapbook world. She’s also the author of the book, Scraptastic!: 50 Messy, Sparkly, Touch-Feely, Snazzy Ways to Jazz Up Your Scrapbook Pages –Nancy]

Feathers are a hot and trendy fashion, home decor, and art-inspiration item right now! Seen in everything from feather hair extensions, earrings, feather screen printed clothing, to watercolour wall art, scrapbooking is not to be left out! Fortunately a few scrapbooking companies have already jumped on this trend, and there are products made just for scrapbookers. Today I am going to take a look at feather-inspired scrapbooking products currently available.

Several scrapbooking companies debuted new lines featuring a good dose of feathers last month at CHA Winter 2013. As a feather-lover, I was excited to see these new releases as there were relatively few available in the scrapbooking world until now.

Jenni Bowlin Studio came out with a fantastic new line that is just chock full of lovely feathery goodness.

Jenni’s new feather rub-ons come in black, gold, and silver. I love that there are different styles and sizes included! Four of the designs even match previously released Jenni Bowlin Studio stamps and digital cut files, which means you can layer these feathered beauties.

At Oscraps, Anna Aspnes has just released a collection of four sets of date strips with four different fonts, as well as brushes designed for circling and striking through the dates. Val C. Designs has released a set of postage-style date accents in both French and English, as well as blank postage stamps that are customizable for any project.

Digital Trends | Holiday Products, Part I

Digital scrapbooking stores are bursting at the seams with new holiday-themed products. There are so many new products showing up daily that it is impossible to share them all. I’ve chosen some of the more unique and interesting products to show you here but don’t forget to check out the links to the stores – there are many, many more wonderful products out there. In an attempt to highlight as many products as possible, I’ve split this article into two parts so check back tomorrow for the second part! Right now, let’s go take a look at some of the newest releases.

Designer Digitals

At Designer Digitals, Cathy Zielske has just released three really fun holiday products. Her first release includes 10 holiday-themed check cards sized just under 3 x 4, perfect for Project Life or any digital or hybrid project and includes two different Hanukkah cards. Her second release is another fun set of cards featuring holiday themes layered over a grid background. Her third release is totally fun and unique – 17 holiday-themed words featuring social-media savvy hashtags.

Katie Pertiet has also released a bunch of new holiday projects. My favorite is her layered template pack that includes four 12×12 digital pages with stitched page grids.  She included little bits and pieces of accents in a December theme so that the pages can be used for Project Life or in a December Daily album.

Studio DoubleD’s newest release is adorable – it includes five ready-made elfin accents that would go perfectly with any digital layout or an Elf on the Shelf page.

Digital Trends | Shades of Fall

It’s hard to believe but the fall season is upon us and, as should be expected, the digital scrapbooking world is full of new fall-related products. Let’s go take a look at just a few of the new products I’ve seen lately.

The Digichick

The Digichick has two new releases that immediately caught my eye. Kimeric Kreation’s new kit includes 12 shabby solid papers and 14 beautiful patterned papers, as well as a full alphabet and lots of elements. Digilicious Designs has also released a new kit in rich seasonal colors with 15 papers and almost 60 elements.
