CHA Mega Show 2014 | Trends To Watch

As the CHA Mega Show 2014 sneak peeks will start to come in earnest in the next week or two, I thought I would share with you all a look at the list I’ve been working on for awhile of what I think will be the trends and styles we will see that should dominate the scrapbooking lines in Anaheim this year.

Wood: Both in its actual physical form and in the form of printed wood grain design, wood has been hot for some time. This will definitely continue in Anaheim with a wide range of die cut wood embellishments being on display. (Is wood the new chipboard? Interesting question…)

Cork: Natural materials (not just wood) in general seem to be on the rise, and cork has definitely gotten hot in the past year. Die cut cork shapes are making appearances in various collections, and consumers are also using die cut machines to cut their own from sheets of cork (like I did for the layout below, which was featured on Season 3 of Scrapbook Soup this past fall).

Transparency: This old trend is making a comeback, long after the demise of the original hip producer of scrapbooking transparencies (Hambly). This is just one of many trends coming out of the Project Life community, and was also popular with December Daily participants this year. In Las Vegas, a growing list of companies introduced transparencies, predominantly in holiday lines (led by former Hambly designer Allison Kreft with her signature line for Webster’s Pages) and this will definitely continue with the spring/summer lines, as already evidenced by introductions leaked by the American Crafts group of brands. CHA Sneak Peek Highlights – Part 1

The sneak peeks are starting to trickle out (due to the way the holidays occur this year, don’t expect the avalanche until probably the week of January 6th). Despite the fact that relatively few are out yet, there are still some really great ones worth putting on your wish list already!

Amy Tangerine has knocked it out of the park – AGAIN – with her new “Plus One” collection. It coordinates with her previous collections, continuing the same palette and style while still somehow looking fresh. A plethora of small patterns makes this perhaps the most usable of all the Amy Tangerine collections to date.

Several items stand out from the collection. These flair badges are particularly appealing, very versatile and so workable for a huge amount of applications: Plus One Flair Continue Reading →

Events | CHA PaperArts 2014 Atlanta [Details]

The Craft & Hobby Association held two webinars last week to share the details of their planned PaperArts show in Atlanta in July with members. What follows are the details of the show as shared with members in the two webinars.

The show is designed to fill the void for the scrapbooking market that was left when the CHA Summer show was discontinued, to give them a marketplace and promotional opportunity for the all-important holiday products released in the second half of the calendar year.

CHA PaperArts 2014 is scheduled to take place from July 29th-31st, 2014 at the Hilton Atlanta in Atlanta, Georgia. July 29th is a workshop day, with the exhibit floor being open on the 30th and 31st.

Hilton Atlanta During the webinars, CHA staff members stressed that plans for the hotel-based show will be very different from the previous CHA convention center shows. They repeatedly described the event as “casual” and stressed that the event will be focused on transactional and product education events – a “buying and learning” show. There will be no business seminars – all education events will be hands-on workshops. Continue Reading →

Events | Craft & Hobby Association Mega Show 2014 Preview

It’s November, fall is in the air, Christmas decorations are everywhere…and that can only mean one thing: CHA is right around the corner!

In case you haven’t heard, the show previously known as “CHA Winter” is now called the “CHA Mega Show”. It’s scheduled to take place in Anaheim, California at the Anaheim Convention Center from January 10th-14th, 2014. Registration is now open for attendees, and is open to qualified trade only.

Along with a new name, there’s lot of changes from the last CHA Winter show. Some of the changes that were introduced at the (last) summer show in Las Vegas will be back, and CHA has been working on a plethora of new additions to the show, in what can only be described as a completely revamped conference experience.

Interest in the show appears to be at a level certainly not seen in recent years. Registration was originally scheduled for two weeks ago but unprecedented demand in the first hour it was open caused server issues, leading CHA to pull the plug until they could expand capacity. Registration re-opened 10 days ago with some classes reportedly selling out within minutes.

Travel & Registration

Anaheim Convention CenterThe location of the re-named Mega Show remains in Anaheim at the Convention Center that has become comfortably familiar the past few years to CHA Winter attendees. Once again, the Anaheim Marriott and Hilton Anaheim are the headquarter hotels for the event but there is a new addition as well. The Sheration Park at the Anaheim Resort has been designated the International Headquarter Property, a community gathering point for all of the international attendees at the show. Each international member staying at the Sheraton will receive a special CHA welcome packet. Continue Reading →
