CHA Winter 2012 | May’s Early Picks

I love this time of year, when new products, partnerships, and lines are announced, revealed, and otherwise unveiled to us. The weeks before CHA always make me excited to check blogs and watch the Scrapbook Update sneak peek page for items I’d missed. While I believe the real pre-show madness and peeks will truly get going this week, there are some strong offerings that have already been shown, and today I am here to share my top early picks.

Rhonna Farrer for My Minds Eye

At the very top of my list is a new partnership and lines that I am very eager to have. Rhonna Farrer has partnered with My Minds Eye to bring us her creative brilliance in a whole new way. With papers and amazingly detailed embellishments, Follow Your Heart by Rhonna Farrer is sure to be one of the show’s major hits.

There are two color schemes in the collection –  ”Be Happy” and “Be Amazing.” As a long time fan of her work, I am very excited to see her designs staying in the paper realm. Many of these designs would work wonderfully with her existing digital designs available at Continue Reading →

New & Noteworthy | Kissing Booth by Basic Grey

Somehow Valentine’s Day-inspired lines are hotter than ever in 2012 – and Basic Grey’s new Kissing Booth line that is now available in stores combines a vintage feel with modern design seamlessly.

This line brings to mind everything I loved about Basic Grey back when they were a new company, while bringing current trendy patterns and fresh designs into the mix. Indeed, like the Christmas line before it (Nordic Holiday), Basic Grey is making the holidays filled with vintage chic-inspired products.

New & Noteworthy: 2012 Hero Arts

Last month I posted an article about the Hero Arts 2012 debut, and now I am back with a closer look at some of the stamps, as well as two new projects. The new collection includes a lot of newsprint, hearts, and birds as well as a variety of background stamps, new sets with Sizzix, and stamps made with card makers in mind as well.

I think that this release finds a great balance between trendy looks and useful designs. Newsprint seems to be re-emerging as a hot trend in 2012, as are hearts. I consider both of these to be staples, so it’s nice to see some fresh looks and new takes on the classics. Continue Reading →

May’s Fabulous CHA Prep Tips

CHA is no longer months away – it is only several weeks now! While it’s an exciting time for crafters wondering what the next big things will be, and what our favorite companies will release, it can also be stressful if you’ll be attending the show. There’s a lot of preparation that goes into attending a trade show! I have attended as a buyer, working booths, covering the show as a reporter for this website, walking the floor as a designer, and more. I have seen things that make me cringe and been wildly impressed by show floor professionalism as well. Having attended a number of shows and walked many a CHA-floor mile, today I want to share my top suggestions and tips for getting ready.

For anyone working or attending:

The show is long. You get thirsty, and the temperature on the show floor is often not anything like the temperature outside. Those are some factors that remain the same no matter what occupation you are attending in. For anyone going, I have the following suggestions:

* Wear comfortable standing shoes. Oh, you’ll be walking a lot, but also make sure the shoes you have on are comfortable not just for covering distance but also for standing up on a hard floor all day long.

* Bring plenty of water and quick snacks. Being dehydrated and hungry is almost a given at CHA, but try to at least reduce that by being prepared and having some water and crackers, granola bars, or other quick snacks on you for a fast pick-me-up.

* Bring lip balm, hand sanitizer, a light sweater, and lotion. Not only can the show floor fluctuate from hot to cold, but it is more often than not very dry in the hall – making Chapstick and lotion much needed amenities. Continue Reading →

New & Noteworthy: Amy Tangerine

To celebrate the start of a new year, and highlight some of the latest and greatest products now hitting shelves, I’m launching a new mini-series that is a spin-off (and will temporarily replace) my Noteworthy column. “New & Noteworthy” will showcase a different brand new product or line each week, looking at its possible uses and sharing a new project created with it as well.

One of the most anticipated debuts at CHA this summer was Amy Tan’s signature line with American Crafts. The Amy Tangerine line proved itself not just pretty to look at, but very useful as well. From travel to everyday moments, a trip to the zoo to random shots of my daughters, I’ve created more than a dozen projects with this line already – which is a lot for me from one line! Indeed, I’ve found myself using it so much I’ve purchased seconds of several products. Video | Making Fabulous Gift Card Holders

The days left in December, and until Christmas are quickly running out, but I’m here today with two ideas for dressing up your gift cards and putting some crafting into your giving this year.  Making use of my scrapbook supplies and having some fun while checking off my gift list is one of my favorite things to do in December!

To share my process and a step-by-step how-to for these two projects I made a video to share: Continue Reading →

Noteworthy | 12.16.2011

Inspiration is coming in 2012 – that much is clear from this week’s noteworthy stories. It is exciting to see that so many new opportunities for learning and being inspired are coming! I’m feeling confident that 2012 is going to be a very creative year. Lots of new classes are being announced, and news of a designer book series was revealed this week as well. Here are this week’s stories:

When the holiday dust clears and January is upon us, wouldn’t it be nice to have some inspiration from a great group of creative women? Nathalie Kalbach announced “Creative Jump Start Summit 2012″ , a free event coming in January:

We are coming together to tell you how we get back into the creative groove and how we get our creative juices flowing. We want to share with you to help you jump start your creativity in 2012.

Hero Arts Debuts 2012 Stamp Catalog

On their website, blog, and through Twitter, I have seen a lot of talk from Hero Arts about their 2012 catalog and initial set of releases for the new year. What really caught my eye is how well they are executing their new product launch, and how much excitement they have generated for their new product release. I was able to attend one of the first Hero Arts 2012 catalog preview parties – there are more than 100 stores around the world participating in this program – and today I am here to talk about that event, and the approach Hero Arts is taking to this release.

The above image is from the Hero Arts website  - clearly linking to a page posting the list of stores participating, as well as contact information and even hours for the stores. Below is a store details page as seen on their website. This is incredibly useful as well as a great promotion for the stores that carry a lot of Hero Arts product! Continue Reading →
