Silhouette Promo | Vinyl Wall Art

Thanks for checking out part three of our Black Friday weekend Silhouette series!

Vinyl wall art - especially text - is all the rage right now in home decor. However, we live in a home that is new construction (well, a little over ten years old) and one of the modern shortcuts many builders use to save money is to put up texture on walls. The texture makes it impossible to stick things like vinyl wall art and other adhesives to the walls.

Even though I can't stick vinyl directly to my wall surfaces, however, there is another way to use some of those beautiful text designs on my walls: frame them!

Supplies:

Constructing this piece to put a pop of color and fun on the recently painted walls of our daughter's bathroom was really simple. First, I let my 11 year old daughter choose a piece of paper from a Heidi Swapp paper pad. Predictably she chose the pink hearts design, which works well in the room against the pale blue walls. I put the paper in the frame and closed up the back. Then I cut out the text design from vinyl and adhered it to the outside front of the frame's glass. This gave the design some dimension to stand out more from the busy paper.

The best part is that if we get sick of the design or redecorate the bathroom, it will be easy (and fast) to freshen the piece by swapping out the paper for a fresh design.

As part of making this piece, I played for the first time with Silhouette's Roll Feeder that works with their vinyl. I'd never paid much attention to it because I thought of a roll feeder as something complicated and really only intended for high volume work. But the Silhouette roll feeder is simple and I had no trouble using it. Rolls of vinyl just drop right into the top of it onto the rollers. Attaching it to the machine is as simple as sliding the flat edge under the machine and aligning the holes with the machine's feet.

The set of rollers and the bumper on the bottom right of the photo below slides to multiple positions to accommodate multiple widths of vinyl rolls. In this photo, it's in the position to hold a 12" roll of vinyl:

I was surprised to discover that the roll feeder was compatible with my Portrait machine, so I tried them out together. The rollers are set in this photo to hold a 9" roll of vinyl, which works with the Portrait's cutting width.

Here's a close-up look at a 9" roll of vinyl sitting on the rollers in the feeder: From the roll, the vinyl goes under the white guide and then into the machine's feed, with no mat.

When you are done cutting, you can cut your work off of the roll using the cutter included with the roll feeder. It slides into a track at the front of the feeder to slice the vinyl off. (An identical system is used for the cutter on the new version of the Cameo machine, with the cutter track being at the rear of the machine.)

The cutter is a safety guarded blade like many of us have in our stash of gift wrap supplies to cut wrapping paper.

Overall, the roll feeder is a deceptively simple but effective way to use rolls of vinyl. Its simplicity in changing rolls - and even in setting up and taking down the feeder entirely - takes a lot of the hassle out of working with vinyl.
