Giveaway | Silhouette Sketch Pens Promotion!

Silhouette is offering another one of their great promotions if you use this link and enter our code “Update” at checkout in their online store. This time around, in addition to the Cameo and Portrait machines, you can get great deals on their Sketch Pens.

My Portrait machine is still a new enough addition to my scrapbook room that I hadn’t had a chance to try the pens yet until I got a chance to try them through this promotion. I’d been eyeing some sketch art in the Silhouette online store that I wanted to try though!

Supplies | Digital Sketching File: Silhouette (Airplane Sketch by Cali Arroyo). Other: Silhouette Sketch Pens (Metallic). Cardstock: Bazzill (Kraft). Stamp: Lawn Fawn (Blue Skies). Ink: Ranger Tim Holtz Distress (Black Soot).

As soon as I saw this airplane in the store awhile back I knew that I wanted to make a masculine card with it with some kraft paper! I used the copper pen from the Metallic Sketch Pen set. It made a tone on tone effect, but not quite, because the metallic has a glint to it. The graphic has an area of white space in the upper right corner that is a perfect spot for a sentiment. I grabbed a Lawn Fawn stamp that says “the sky’s the limit” from their Blue Skies set, but you could also use something less themed like a simple “Happy Birthday”.

Once I started playing with the sketch pens, one of the questions that I wanted answered was how well they showed up on colored paper. Here I made three cards for my Project Life album out of various papers, to see how the graphic would show up. The sketch pen is the yellow out of the starter kit.

Supplies | Digital Sketching File: Silhouette (sketched sun by snapdragon snippets). Other: Silhouette Sketch Pens (Starter). Cardstock: Bazzill Smooth (Coconut). Patterned Paper: Heidi Swapp “Serendipity” 6×6 paper pad (ledger paper), My Mind’s Eye “My Girl” 6×6 paper pad (blue chevrons).

The pen shows up really bold on the white cardstock but you can really see the difference on the two patterned papers in how the pen shows up. It shows up very nicely but with somewhat muted color on the ledger paper, but on the darker, bolder chevron paper the yellow gets almost lost. This isn’t a very bold or solid ink, so plan accordingly when using it. Overall, I would compare the sketch pens to a gel pen in ink consistency and weight.

I really see these pens as being useful for my Project Life album, to create quick and easy custom journal cards, especially ones with text elements on them. One of the kits that I have is the Midnight kit, so I created this card in black and yellow to coordinate with it.

Supplies | Digital Sketching File: Silhouette (Life is so Good phrase by Lori Whitlock). Other: Silhouette Sketch Pens (Glitter). Patterned Paper: Fancy Pants Designs (Park Bench 6×6 paper pad).

The glitter pens aren’t glitter in the way you think of glitter being laid down by something like Stickles. When you look at the narrow black glitter colored lines straight on, it looks like flat black. It’s only when you turn card in the light, as in the bottom picture, that you get the reflections off of the sparkles embedded in the ink.

You get more of the glitter effect if, instead of a think outline, you use a design that has fill, like the arrow below:

With a lot of the ink laid down together, the glitter effect shows up more. You get much more sparkle and shine from the design.

Supplies | Digital Sketching File: Silhouette (sketch arrows by Jennifer Wambach). Other: Silhouette Sketch Pens (Glitter). Patterned Paper: My Mind’s Eye (My Girl 6×6 paper pad).

The two cards above were created to match my daughter’s Project Life kit, the “Blush” kit. Arrows are really popular design elements for Project Life, and with the Silhouette Sketch Pens, you can always have journal cards in just the right size, shape, direction and color for your albums!

The pink heart journaling card is a design by Lori Whitlock called “3×4 Lori Whitlock sketch life cards”, executed on white cardstock with the pink pen from the sketch pen starter kit. Done in any number of colors, the design can coordinate beautifully with my daughter’s Blush kit and I will never run out of pretty lined journaling cards for her this way!

I’ve just scratched the surface today…I look forward to using my sketch pens for a lot more projects!

So, lets talk about the promotion and giveaway! These are all great deals but especially on the Portrait (and you know I love my Portrait – I highly recommend that machine!)

Well aren’t the Silhouette Sketch Pens the Bomb! I really appreciate your descriptions along with examples of what to expect. Thanks Nancy! Do you need to have the extra holder for the pens I wonder? Also do you think crafters could use crayons as well? What fun the Silhouette Portrait could provide. Again Thanks.

I love, love, love, my silhouette machine. I have all other machines out there (cricut, wishblade, plazzles) but nothing comes close to the silhouette. Had I tried it sooner I would have saved a lot of money. It would be great to own the silhouette portrait machine, though. I guess now I should try out the Sketch Pens. Thanks for the great offer.
