Trending: Feathers (Review and Wrap-Up)

Hi everyone! This is Ashley back again today, with what is truly the last installment of what has been a very fun series on feathers as a scrapbooking trend. Today’s post is a review and wrap-up of the feather series… and epilogue of sorts. I have a few projects to share that I made to go along with the feather topics over the past month. In Part 1, we discussed feather themed scrapbooking products. I used the Cocoa Daisy feather stamps (that are included in the wonderful give-away, which ends on March 12th!) and heat embossed several feathers on plain white cardstock. Then I cut them out by hand and adhered them on the side of my layout. I love the texture and sparkle the gold glitter finish embossing powder gives these stamped embellishments!

For this next page, I made a little embellished tag, using a lovely feathered flower from Prima. This delicate white flower already had a nice spray of white bird feathers around it, so I just tucked in a few other small pieces to make a larger statement: Two handmade feathers, a sprig of pipberries, and a cute little gold ladybug pin, also from Prima. I kept the rest of the layout simple, so there wouldn’t be much else to overwhelm the cute photos and pretty feather arrangement.

During week two, I talked about finding feather products for your pages that aren’t typically marketed for scrapbookers or perhaps found in the craft aisle. Here I’ve used a piece of flair with a cute repeating feather pattern on it, from a flair for buttons. I used it to set the centre of an oversized tulle bow. I love the way the bold black and white pattern on the flair really jumps off this page!

( Note how I also tucked a large off-white feather I cut with my Cameo just behind the book page and photos. Love the way this fills in some of the empty space on the layout without overpowering the page.)

Supplies | Patterned Paper: American Crafts. Tulle: American Crafts. Alphabet Stickers: American Crafts. Brads: American Crafts, Crate Paper. Button: Crate Paper. Spray Ink: Heidi Swapp. Stamp: Cocoa Daisy. Ink: Versamark by Tsukineko. Embossing Powder: American Crafts. Tag: Ranger Inkssentials. Flair: A Flair for Buttons.

Week three was all about DIY feathers. Handmade, cut, or painted by you. All you and the paper and paint and craft products you love! I was really inspired to try making my own variations after seeing so many great examples all over the crafty blog world, and in the end couldn’t decide which one or two to use on a layout, so I just used them all!

Going across the page from left to right: vintage bookpage feather with misting; weathered paint vellum feahter; silver feather with hand drawn detail; silver foil feather dipped in silver glitter; handstitched ombre feather; gilded feather; whitewashed inky feather; mixed media cardboard feather.

And this now officially concludes our look at feathers! I hope you enjoyed our month of feathers here at Scrapbook Update and will give them a try (or two!) on your next layout.

Embossed feathers – I’m not so much into the gold, but I do see myself embossing a nice chevron pattern in silver. Thanks for the inspiration – this was a great series!

This is awesome, Ashley. Love that first picture. The second layout, your baby is so sweet – aww :) My most favorite part on that one is the tag with flower and feather. I’m pinning it, so thank you!
