Valentine’s Day Lovebirds

How about not one but two Valentine’s Days cards from designer Kathy Martin? Kathy brilliantly demonstrates the current trend of layering with the multitude of elements on these cards – and it all works because she utilized coordinates from Doodlebug Design’s new Lovebirds collection!

121228-February-14-Key One key element to successful layering is dimension. Kathy used a lot of here, using dimensional adhesive to create space between the various layers. This creates visual separation that keeps the layers from melding together into one visually confusing and overwhelming mess. 121228-February-14-Details

The problem with using a lot of paper or cardstock layers is that it is easy for them to look “hard” with all the precise edges, and dull because there is no change in texture. Kathy solved that problem here with a few simple details that make all the difference.

121228-SweetheartThe stitching – on both cards – offers just a small change in textural depth, a softer edge, and some movement. The Doodle Twine offers even more softness and movement to the design, falling randomly down the middle of the card from the bow. Two hard elements also provide depth in different ways. The mini clothespin makes for a big chunky element to contrast with the flatter ones. The small jewels have big visual impact because they reflect light so much differently than the matte finish cardstock they sit on, attracting a lot of attention for their size. 121228-Sweetheart-Phrase
