Pinterest Inspiration | Fashion Ad

While I was looking through Pinterest last week, I came across this photo below. It’s a layout put together from several fashion ads that recently appeared in Vogue magazine. While the fashions themselves aren’t exactly suited to my daily life, the layout design certainly is, and I made a layout based on the design.

This layout utilizes a large focal photo stretching across the top of the page with three smaller photos layered underneath. The name of the apparel company is layered over the top photo, as is the text of the ad. The top photo is bright and airy – literally, in this context. The three smaller photos on the bottom are darker and busier which balances the lighter, larger photo. I knew immediately which photos I wanted to use for a layout based on this ad design.

All supplies from Designer Digitals | Template: The Monthly Photo Page Add-On Pack for 12 x 12 (modified) by Cathy Zielske. Papers: In My Backyard Mini Kit (blue paper) by Pattie Knox. School Mates Kit (light grey paper) by Katie Pertiet. Embellishments: Harrison Kit (stitched tag) and Santa Cruz Mini Kit (blue tag) by Lynn Grieveson. Defining Moments: Summer Brushes and Stamps No. 02 (circular brush) and Beach House Memories Mini Kit (starfish) by Katie Pertiet.

I love to design layouts based on ad layouts – they are usually well-balanced and I always feel that I learn something about design and balance after working with a graphic designer’s layout. I started off this scrapbook layout with a template designed by Cathy Zielske, my favorite graphic designer. I knew that she had a template similar to the inspiration ad that would make the entire process go faster.

Cathy’s original design called for one large photo on the top and six smaller photos on the bottom. I simply deleted three of the photo masks on the bottom so that the template now matched the design of the ad I was using for my inspiration. I added in four photos from our recent vacation and the basic design was done – exactly mimicking the ad design. I added two different background papers – a very light grey under the photos and then layered the entire photo collage on a piece of light blue cardstock. After that, I added my title across the large photo and added just four small embellishments. This was a super-quick layout to make and I love that as much as I love a well-designed layout.

Creative inspiration is all around us and you can find it everywhere – even in a magazine ad. I hope that you are inspired by this design as I was. Let me know where you find inspiration and maybe I’ll use it in a future column. You can also follow my Pinterest boards here.

My first thought was how do I incorporate embellishments/stamping/journaling when using an ad and you made it very easy to see how that could be done. Thank you for sharing your ideas.
