Monthly Tags | Tag #12 – December 2011

OK, I’m a bit behind on my monthly tag series, I admit…but I’m working on getting caught up! Today I’m bringing you tag #12, for December 2011. It was actually completed quite a while ago, but I just realized that I never posted it!

(In case you aren’t familiar with my monthly tag series, you can learn the story behind this album of tags by reading the intro article to the tag  series. You can also see the previous tags in the series by clicking on the Monthly Tag archives.)

Since  it was December, I went with a subtle holiday theme for the tag: red and green, and with a bird on a branch (a motif often seen in winter holiday design).

December 2011 Monthly Tag by Nancy Nally

Also: Pink Paislee Parisian Anthology (Beautiful Butterfly), Maya Mist (Fern Green), Studio Calico Mister Huey’s (Applejack, Schoolhouse), DecoArt Acrylic paint (Dazzling Metallic – Rich Espresso), Emaginations circle punch, Hero Arts clear stamps (Artistic Months), Technique Tuesday clear stamps (Williamsburg Numbers & Punctuation – Small), Ribbon (Michael’s Stores), Jump Ring (Michael’s Stores).

The background of the tag is cut from the Pink Paislee Parisian Anthology resist paper. I colored it by spraying various shades of green mist on my Ranger Inkssentials Craft Mat and then mashing the tag into it, and blotting it dry. Then I dripped on the red to create “berries” in my tag scene. The next layer of the tag’s design is all stamping: The date is stamped in the upper left corner using the Hero Arts and Technique Tuesday sets with the Gathered Twigs Distress Ink from the Fall 2011 Seasonal Ink set. Then I stamped my two-toned branch using the Papertrey Ink stamp. I colored the stem with a Distress Ink pen, and then inked the leaves with an ink pad. December 2011 tag close-up The main element on the tag is the die cut bird. It is die cut out of spare chipboard I had laying around (thanks to my daughter’s rate of consumption of legal pads) and then painted. The textured look was achieved through layers of paint, and mixing colors. The bottom layer of paint is Martha Stewart Satin Acrylic in Vanilla Bean (a very dark brown). Then I mixed Claudine Hellmuth Matte Multi-Medium and DecoArt Dazzling Metallic Acrylic in Rich Espresso (available at Michael’s) to create a sort of metallic wash to put a thin layer of metallic color and shine over the dark brown, but still let it show through a bit. I paid attention to my brush strokes and kept them all flowing a single direction. The result is metallic paint with dark brown striations in it. It’s exactly the look I wanted! The photo doesn’t do the metallic glisten of the paint texture justice. A dot of Ranger Enamel Accents in black finished off the bird.

I did something on this tag I don’t often do – allow something to hang off of the edge of it. I’m just constrained that way, I guess! But with the sizes of the pockets in the tag album, I know that I have a bit of leeway in that area to work with where the tags will still fit in the pockets. So for the first time, with tag #12, I decided to use it!

The last element is really simple. For the number, I just punched a circle out and put the number stickers on top of it.

I usually just put some ribbon or jute at the top of my tags, but this time I was inspired to add another element to give it a holiday touch – some Tim Holtz Baubles that sort of serve as Christmas ornaments, hanging down off of the ribbon.

I’ve got some catching up to do on the tag series…several more of the them are completed and ready to post this week, so keep your eye out for them!

Nancy you are truly an inspiration and I so admire your strength and positive attitude. The tags you have created are beautiful and the album is such a nice tribute to yours and your husband’s love and commitment to each other in good times and bad. I’m a new listener to the PRT and miss hearing your voice each week, but look forward to your posts here and wish you much success and happiness with your new projects.

The colors you used are so “earthy” and yummy! I love the background paper and the texture on the bird, too! The baubles are the perfect finishing touch! TFS!
