Pinterest Inspiration | Dark Backgrounds

I’ve started pinning books that I want to read on Pinterest and when I came across the book cover below, I knew that I wanted to do more than just read it. The colors and design of the book cover inspired me to scrapbook some of my favorite photos.

The title of this book is Gone Girl, written by Gillian Flynn, and the cover design is very simple, yet very eye-catching. The black background causes the graphics and title to just pop off the page. You can’t help but want to look at it again. The title is written in a contrasting bright pink and starts about a third of the way down the page. Text across the top and then on the bottom right corner balances the white graphics that lead off the left side of the cover.

All supplies from Designer Digitals | Cardstock: Classic Cardstock: Into the Night (black) and Botanical Collection Paper Pack (white) by Katie Pertiet. Brushes: Fancy Flourishes Brushes and Stamps (white and lavender brushes) by Katie Pertiet. Title: Jessie Kit (title brush) by Lynn Grieveson. Embellishments : Jessie Kit (banner, glass button, and heart) by Lynn Grieveson.

I started this layout with an 12 x 12 piece of black cardstock. Similar to the placement of the title on the book cover, I placed my photos along the top third of the cardstock. Once I had the photos in place, I realized that I wanted to have the digital brushes flow off the page, so I layered white and lavender brushes under the photos.  I placed journaling under the photos beside the title. Finally, I added a small banner and glass button on the bottom right with the date to mimic the design of the book cover and to balance the design.

The basic design of this layout is very simple and this layout came together in under 30 minutes. Using a book cover as a basis for a design is something that anyone can do to speed up the scrapping process. I hope that you are inspired by this, too. Let me know where you find inspiration and maybe I’ll use it in a future column. You can also follow my Pinterest boards here.

Love that. Dark backgrounds are much easier for me to use than light, white being the most difficult. I wish there was a way to get the effect of those digital brushes on a paper layout. They’re the perfect embellishement!

I still scrap with paper and glue sometimes and I’ve never been able to master stamping. But I’m sure someone with more skills than I have could use stamps to achieve a very similar result. :)

Purchased this book last month via Audible.com, so I never actually saw the book cover. Given the story line, the choice for the cover makes sense. As far as the book is concerned, I probably wouldn’t have gotten through it had I read it instead of listened. Hated the ending. Just sayin……….
