The first day of the CHA Summer 2012 trade show opened this morning with a general session breakfast and keynote by Jay Goltz. An entrepreneur who founded a custom framing business in the 1970’s, Goltz is well-known to business owners nationwide for his writing on the wonderful New York Times small business blog, You’re The Boss.
Goltz provided a great overview for retailers of the nuts and bolts of how to hire great employees and be a good boss for your company, and stressed why having only excellent employees is so important to a business that wants to be successful. One of the recurring themes of his presentation was the necessity of making the decision to let ineffective employees go, and the difficulty that some people have doing that. Goltz specifically addressed and attempted to take apart the concept that only a “cutthroat” boss fires someone.
The session concluded with a Q&A with Goltz that delved into issues like mark-up and margin, marketing, and seasonal employees.
