Pinterest Inspiration | Vintage Kenmore Ad

Vintage advertisements have been all over Pinterest lately and I’m hopelessly drawn to them. This amusing Kenmore ad was my favorite this week.

I’m sure that this was considered an upscale advertisement when it debuted but it’s amusing now to look back on the colors, styles and clothing choices of the 50s and 60s. However, this ad is somewhat timeless in one way – the design. With a single, oversized photo as the focal point, the title is placed off-center under the photo with white space under that. This brings the eye directly to the journaling and makes the reader want to find out more. I used that design as inspiration for a scrapbook layout.

All supplies from Designer Digitals | Patterned Papers: Textured Canvas: Neutrals Paper Pack (gray paper) by Katie Pertiet. Alison Kit (blue polka-dot paper) by Maplebrook Studios. Embellishments: Alison Kit (round epoxy) by Maplebrook Studios. Whimsy Borderlines: Loopsies (line brush) by Andrea Victoria. Twisted Clusters Brushes and Stamps No. 01 (floral brush) by Katie Pertiet. Just Awesome Tabs Brushes and Stamps (tab) by Ali Edwards.

I started this layout with an 8.5 x 11 piece of cardstock. Following the design of the ad, I placed a single, oversized photo on the top two-thirds of the page and placed my title and journaling under it. Once I had the basic portion of the layout done, it was time to pretty it up just a bit so that it didn’t look as stark as it might have otherwise done. I placed the layout on top of a fun polka-dot paper, added a digital floral stamp beside the title and also added a tab by the journaling. I finished the layout by adding a small epoxy to the top of the photo which adds some balance to the design.

The basic design of this layout is very simple and this layout came together in under 20 minutes. Using ads as a basis for a design is something that anyone can do to speed up the process. I hope that you are inspired by this ad, too. Let me know where you find inspiration and maybe I’ll use it in a future column. You can also follow my Pinterest boards here.

Cute LO!! I LOVE seeing ads like this! I’m thinking the 2 kids with their noses pressed up against the window in the background are hilarious.

I think the colors of the 6o’s were avocado green and mustard yellow!
