Pinterest Inspiration | Polka Dots

Pinterest continues to be a huge source of inspiration for me and this week, I was drawn towards these simple polka-dot cocktail napkins.

These green and white polka-dot napkins just scream summer and fun to me. These napkins are from BHLDN and I love so much about this photo. The colors – green and white – feel fresh and inviting and the layered patterns really bring energy to the photo. I couldn’t wait to translate that to a layout.

All supplies from Designer Digitals | Patterned Paper: Textured Canvas: Neutrals Paper Pack by Katie Pertiet (canvas), Ripped and Stitched Wordwise by Lynn Grieveson (ripped polka dot paper), Spot Dots No. 26 Paper Pack by Katie Pertiet (polka dot paper). Frames: Postage Stamp Frames No. 06 by Katie Pertiet. Embellishments: Poppies Kit by Lynn Grieveson (banner, floral stickers and flowers). Journaling Spots: Ripped and Stitched Wordwise (ripped tag) and Inky Spots and Strips (title sticker) by Lynn Grieveson.

As you can see, my layout does not look like the inspiration photo. The final version of this layout looks very different from where I started but I’m so happy that I stuck with this inspiration photo. The flow of creating often leads many of us down a variety of paths before we’re done, and this layout is a great example of that. I started off using green polka-dots and other patterns and it simply wasn’t working. So instead of using green, I changed the papers and went with a more neutral gray and mocha polka-dot theme. I layered two pieces of different polka-dot papers over a canvas background – one with a straight edge and one with a ripped edge. Centering the photos on the top layer, I framed them with postage stamp frames that complement the dots in the paper. I then added just a few simple embellishments – a banner, two flowers and a sticker – before adding a title and journaling to my journaling spots.

I love the way that the polka dots and layered papers create energy and interest even though my colors are significantly different than the inspiration photo. Polka dots just bring fun and whimsy to any project and I’m glad that I followed the creative flow on this project and didn’t give up just because the original color scheme didn’t work.

While my layout is entirely digital, this layout would be just as easy to recreate with traditional paper products. Try layering polka dots with other patterns and see what you come up with. The result is sure to be fun and whimsical!

I hope that you are inspired by this photo, too. Let me know where you find inspiration and maybe I’ll use it in a future column. You can also follow my Pinterest boards here.

I like where the inspiration took you, too. Nice LO. Pintrest is certainly a fantastic place to find inspiration for color combos, LO, pattern mixing.
    Thank so much for sharing.

Aren’t we all so lucky to have such an inspiring place as Pinterest to spark our creativity! I love it when I’m perusing pins and something I see makes me jump up and start gathering supplies for a project! Love your page and all those fun polka dots! Such a great banner too!

Love polka dots, especially the new embossed dots that Bazzill does and the tone on tone dot paper. I actually have a Cropper Hopper paper organizer with just dots and stripes in it. I use them so often for borders! BTW, I love the perforated edge on your photos!
