Noteworthy | 6.29.2012

This week, there’s a bunch of noteworthy sales, some great links, and a few CHA-related announcements (of course!)

Nikki Sivils made an announcement this week that will be disappointing to her many fans. Not only is she choosing for her company to not exhibit at CHA Summer 2012 in Chicago, but she has chosen to not design any products for this development cycle. Nikki attributed the decision to stress from several recent family crisises, including her father’s cancer diagnosis, her brother’s long recovery from an accident that left him with serious burns, and her grandmother’s passing away.

I, personally, will miss seeing Nikki (and her husband Dan) and her unique design brand in Chicago. I wish Nikki and her family all the best and look forward to seeing her and her company in Anaheim in January!

Elle’s Studio made a couple of big announcements this week. First, they announced they are exhibiting at their first CHA show, with a booth in Chicago at CHA Summer 2012. They plan to release three lines – everyday, Halloween, and Christmas – along with some new stamps at the show.

Their second announcement was that to make room for the new CHA releases, they are having a Grab Bag and Tag Retirement sale. The grab bags are sold out, but there are still plenty of retiring tags left at a huge discount with the coupon code from the Elle’s Studio blog! Get them while they last, because although the sale lasts until Sunday night, they are going to go fast! Continue Reading →

Gallery Highlights | 6.28.2012

Welcome to Gallery Highlights for this week!  I have some fun layouts using pastel hues this week, and a bunch of multi-photo layouts. I hope you like them all as much as I do. Let’s go take a look! You can click on the links to visit the layouts in their galleries and view supply lists, leave a comment for the designer, or view the designer’s other work.

I’ve had multiple requests for two-page layouts in the highlights, and I’m always on the lookout for them. Valerie’s layout below is a stunning example of a great way to fit a lot of photos on a two-page layout and her page is designed beautifully. She placed 12 photos slightly off-center on the layout, and added the date plus other text embellishments to the left side – which balances out the title and journaling on the right side. The pastel hues of the papers and embellishments allow her photos – both color and black-and-white – to truly shine.

First Look | Carta Bella Paper

Editor’s Note: Carta Bella Paper, sister company of Echo Park Paper, is going to be one of the most anticipated new companies showing product at CHA Summer 2012  in Chicago in a few weeks. Their debut product line has just hit stores. I asked guest writer Tami Morrison to take a look and preview the line for our readers — Nancy

Carta Bella Paper debuted recently accompanied by a lot of buzz in the scrapbook world. With the aesthetic of Creative Director Carina Gardner and the marketing mojo of Echo Park, this company is positioned to make a big splash on the scrapbooking scene.

I recently spent some time playing with their debut line, “Beautiful Moments“. The substantial, textured papers feature a vintage pink, gold, red, and black palette that inspire spring and summer layouts, and would also work great with Valentine’s Day photos.

Four Reasons To Attend The Craft & Hobby Association Convention & Trade Show

Twice a year the Craft and Hobby Association (CHA) holds a trade show. I first attended CHA in the winter of 2005 when it was held in Atlanta. I attended as a buyer, as an employee of a local store. I only attended one day, and the experience was exhausting. I remember seeing lots of new product, picking up catalogs, giving feedback to my store’s owner, and doing a few make & takes.

Each time CHA comes around, professionals in the industry have to decide whether they want to attend or not. This is a big decision, because it may be very expensive to attend (depending on needs for expenses like travel, child care, etc). Not attending, though, may cost a business customers or opportunities. It can feel difficult to accurately gauge how valuable attending is for your business.

While considering whether to attend CHA, you’re probably thinking about immediate, practical things like:

  • Do I have the time?
  • Do I have the financial resources to travel and attend the show?
  • Do I have the financial resources to travel and rent a booth at the show (if you are a manufacturer or supplier)?
  • Can other people cover my responsibilities while I am away? Continue Reading →
