Big Picture Classes Launches “Pro Press Releases”

Today, Scrapbook Update and Big Picture Classes are teaming together to announce something that we believe will change the crafts industry for the better.

Improving the quality of press relations in our industry has been a passion of mine for quite awhile. As an editor in the industry, I deal with too many companies who aren’t taking full advantage of the opportunities that might be available to them to promote their companies through media relations. This is unfortunate, since effective press relations is the most cost-effective marketing a company can use.

I know that many of our industry’s small companies are run by entrepreneurs who are wearing many hats at their company, hats that they may not have formal training to wear. I am in that same position myself, actually, with many of my own responsibilities as a small business owner.

To help these entrepreneurs, I’ve been looking for ways to provide education to the industry about how to best spread marketing message to editors like myself. At CHA Summer 2010 in Chicago, I was honored to be able to head a panel on Press Relations for Manufacturers.

Now, with the help of Big Picture Classes, I’m happy to be able to offer even more education to the industry’s businesses. Today we’re launching my class Pro Press Releases, which is available now on the Big Picture Classes website.

Pro Press Releases is a self-paced BPC class, which means students can take the class on their own schedule and at their own pace. You’ll learn all about how to create professional and effective press releases, through audio and video messages and downloadable class handouts. The class is priced at $20, a small price for knowledge that is a large investment in your business.

Check out Pro Press Releases at Big Picture Classes today! Learn how to make the most of your press releases!

Advantus Acquires Sulyn Industries

Advantus announced today that they have acquired substantially all of the assets of Sulyn Industries, which manufactures and sells glitter and sequins in Coral Springs, FL, as well as importing craft products.

Sulyn Industries has been selling products such as glitter, sequins and craft kits to the crafts industry for over 25 years. The company made news early in 2010 when an Associated Press investigation on children’s toys imported from China named Sulyn as one company that had imported metal toys from China that contained high levels of toxic cadmium. The AP reported that its tests on a bracelet charm sold by Walmart that was imported by Sulyn in 2008 showed high levels of cadmium, a carcinogen.

Both companies are based in Florida. Sulyn’s operations will be leaving their current home in Coral Springs and moving to Advantus’s headquarters in Jacksonville, with Sulyn products beginning to ship from Jacksonville in early December. Advantus is promising that “several key employees” will be remaining with Sulyn through the operations transfer.

Advantus already owned craft brands Cropper Hopper, Tim Holtz Idea-ology, The Girls Paperie, and Tree of Life. In addition to its crafts brands, it owns such brands as Vituri, Z International, and See Jane Work.

May’s Product Picks: A Whimsical Halloween

Choices in scrapbook product go way beyond pumpkins and cobwebs for Halloween these days. There are a variety of choices in style, color, and mood in the latest lines, and today I’m going to spotlight some of my picks from this season for your fun and whimsical Halloween pages.

I’m not always a fan of trendy purple in my Halloween product, but with the super fun designs and very useful papers that make creating layouts a snap, I’ve fallen in love with Echo Park’s “Happy Halloween” collection. This new company is impressing me more and more with each new release, and this one is no exception. [available now at  Scrapbook.com | Two Peas]

Clutching our precious first bag of candy corn, my daughter’s photo went so perfectly with the papers and embellishments in the kit from Echo Park. I love the patterns and how fun they are to mix-and-match together. The stickers are cute too. They are a nice mix of big and small shapes.

Supplies:
Echo Park Sticker Sheet  [Scrapbook.com |Two Peas]
Echo Park Alpha Stickers  [Scrapbook.com | Two Peas]
Echo Park Jack-O-Lantern paper [Scrapbook.com | Two Peas]
Echo Park Skull paper  [Scrapbook.com | Two Peas]
Echo Park purple stripe paper  [Two Peas]
Tim Holtz Stickles in Marmalade   [Scrapbook.com | Two Peas]
Ranger Enamel Accents in White   [Scrapbook.com]
Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L MyStik tape runner [Scrapbook.com]

Another fun choice, right down to the festive flourishes, comes from Creative Memories and the aptly named “Cheerful Halloween” collection.

Next look at this favorite paper of mine and you can see that American Crafts is full of treats with the Boo collection. [available now at Scrapbook.com and Two Peas]

Still looking for more? I also recommend Doodlebug’s Spooky Town collection. It’s so full of their trademark cuteness, it makes me feel like a kid again. [Scrapbook.com | Two Peas]

I hope you liked the treats I shared with you here today. I’m looking forward to scrapbooking with lots of sweet products this season almost as much as I am looking forward to the candy itself. If you have a favorite product or style you like to scrapbook Halloween with, please feel free to share in the comments below!
