Amazon.com purchased online sewing retailer Fabric.com two years ago in June 2008. Now it looks from an online job listing like the company might be planning to use Fabric.com to expand their presence in the online crafts market, including scrapbooking.
The job listing of interest is for a merchandise buyer at Fabric.com’s Marietta, GA offices. The description for it includes the following: “Our current plans include expansion into the broader needlecraft and craft categories (crochet, embroidery, knitting, scrapbooking, etc.).”
Currently, Fabric.com does have a Crafts section with a scrapbooking sub-section. But they carry only an extremely limited number of SKU’s from Basic Grey, Clearsnap, Cricut, Die Cuts With A View, Fiskars, Glue Dots, GCD Studios, Hampton Art, Hero Arts, Inkadinkado, K & Company, Mrs. Grossman’s, Ranger, Sizzix and Tattered Angels. Much of the selection is actually rubberstamping supplies, with only a few paper pads or collections and embellishments offered.
Amazon.com already is a force to be reckoned with in certain areas of the scrapbook market. Of course, their book selection and pricing (their specialty) is excellent. Their selection and pricing of various die cutting equipment is extremely competitive, as well. Some niche retailers are using Fulfilled by Amazon to order & deliver their products, most notably Becky Higgins’ Project Life.
It will be interesting to see what Amazon.com may have in store for the crafts market via Fabric.com…
