NSD 2010 2pm Hour: Sketches For Cards

Let’s talk sketches some more…but a different kind of sketches.

Remember that Michaels run I mentioned earlier that I made this week? Well along with the items I mentioned earlier (and a huge chunk of the K & Company Handmade collection including the chipboard alphabet & Garnish paper pad) I bought the latest idea book from Paper Crafts magazine. It’s called Go To Sketches. And I’ve been poring over it ever since!

I can’t put this thing down! I love to make cards but I’ve always felt totally useless at it from the perspective of knowing how to use the space on the card and lay it out. This sketch book provides a whole ton of frameworks that I can use to follow as recipes while choosing my own ingredients of elements and supplies to use. I can’t wait to sit down and scrap some cards with it!

If you’d like to see what “real” scrappers are doing with the card sketches, Paper Crafts has been running challenges with the book and having people post their cards on Flickr: Challenge 1 and Challenge 2. Challenge 2 runs until May 3rd, and there are prizes!

Babies (and kids) are a great reason to make cards, so this hour’s prize is a set of stamps from Unity Stamp Company:

That’s the Sketchy Little Boy set. The stamps are cling foam mounted red rubber. They work with an acrylic block.

How to Enter:

All you have to do to be one of the lucky winners is leave a comment on this entry before Midnight U.S. eastern time on Sunday night, May 2nd Monday night May 3rd (deadline extended for this drawing only due to Feedburner mailing issue) telling us if you’ve ever tried using sketches to make cards. Make sure you include your email address in the line reserved for it on the comment form (for your own protection, don’t put it in the text of the comment, where it will be visible to the public – just in the line labeled “email” in the form where only Scrapbook Update staff can see it). We will need it to notify you if you are a winner. Winners will be drawn by random drawing from all eligible entries. One entry per person.
(Note: If you are reading this post via an RSS subscription, click here and it will take you to the giveaway on the  Scrapbook Update website where you can fill out the comment form at the bottom of the article to enter.)

I love making cards! I use card sketches only when I’m in a hurry and need a card quickly and don’t have time to mull over different ideas.

  2. Teri Weber May 2, 2010 at 1:45 pm #

Sketching is awesome….I sorta ‘copy’ others in the card department! LOL
    Those stamps are so cute!

  3. Teri Weber May 2, 2010 at 1:46 pm #

I love sketches, they are wicked helpful! I kinda ‘copy’ others with my cards!
    Love those sweet stamps!

  4. Ginny May 2, 2010 at 1:56 pm #

I’ve only used sketches for layouts, but I have a bunch saved for cards. I don’t get around to making them often, but when I do I want to start using sketches. Just speeds up the already slow process for me!

  5. Renee T (italgal on BPS) May 2, 2010 at 3:21 pm #

I have not used card sketches, per se – but I have copied LO’s I’ve seen for scrapbook pages, and adapted them for cards.

  6. Melinda Wilson May 2, 2010 at 3:34 pm #

I use sketches all the time. It makes things go faster.

  7. serena May 2, 2010 at 8:16 pm #

  9. Stacy W. May 2, 2010 at 9:59 pm #

  10. Allie May 3, 2010 at 12:24 am #

I have NEVER used a sketch to make a card but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the one on the front of that magazine with the bows, buttons and lots of white space. MUST try that one!

  11. Laurie May 3, 2010 at 1:08 am #

    No, not really for cards.

  12. karen keiper May 3, 2010 at 1:17 am #

I dont usually use sketches for cards as they are usually pretty simple cards that i make!! However iif i see a card i love i will save it and scraplift, so thats just like a sketch

  13. Brianna May 3, 2010 at 1:32 am #

I’m more of a scrapbooker than stamper, but I love how so many of Unity’s stamps cater to that, too. Thanks for the chance to win that cute set!

  14. Erica Lasham May 3, 2010 at 3:21 am #

I love using sketches, they can be interpreted in so many different ways, I find them quite inspirational.

  15. Kary May 3, 2010 at 4:18 am #

I often try to participate in sketch challenges for making cards, but most times when I make cards I don’t really sketch them out first. I just go with the flow. However, I do enjoy sketches because it’s fun to start from a sketch and see where that takes me.

  16. Gab McCann May 3, 2010 at 7:42 am #

I’ll have to see if that book is available in Australia. I love sketches!

  17. lenore bremner May 3, 2010 at 8:11 am #

I have definitely used sketches before for making cards. It really helps me complete cards quickly – love them!

  18. Debbie P May 3, 2010 at 8:26 am #

Oh, no! I’m so sad I can’t enter this, as I didn’t get this e-mail until today–it was marked 3:06 a.m. last night (today is Monday), so I had no way to beat the deadline. I am a big cardmaker and would love this book. I was gone over the weekend and missed all of the NSD festivities, and would so have loved to be able to enter this contest. Maybe next time!

  19. Christine May 3, 2010 at 8:42 am #

I use sketches for scrapbooking but it definitely would be fun to try for cards! Thanks for the chance to win!

  20. Lori Shrout May 3, 2010 at 8:47 am #

Nice stamp set! I have not used unity stamps for card making – but I am totally anxious to try!

  21. Mary Jane May 3, 2010 at 9:03 am #

Yes, I have and still do use sketches for cards and scrapbook layouts. They spark more ideas. This new idea book looks very exciting.

  22. sharon d May 3, 2010 at 9:13 am #

I love making cards. I’ve used sketches for scrapbook layouts, but haven’t tried them for cards. It would be fun to try the sketches, thanks for the chance to win…

  23. Terri Harmon May 3, 2010 at 9:16 am #

I love using sketches for scrapbooking but have never tried it for cards. Sounds like a great idea.

  24. Lyneen May 3, 2010 at 9:24 am #

Yes I have used sketches for cards and they work… there is more time to play with products and less time to worry about placement! Thanks for another great giveaway, love the little stamps.

  25. Marcy May 3, 2010 at 9:33 am #

Yes I use sketches and card samples to get ideas for my cards.

  26. Sheri Riemenschneider May 3, 2010 at 9:42 am #

Wow – I wasn’t aware of this magazine but, will certainly be checking it out. I do make cards and have spent HOURS coming up with an idea for just one card. I think this will be a huge benefit to cardmakers from beginners to the super experienced. Sometimes it just takes an idea to be the kick-start that’s needed to get the creative juices flowing!

  27. leighann sondrup May 3, 2010 at 9:46 am #

I love using sketches and i love making cards–but somewhere along the line i need to find the love in sending them out–haven’t gotten there yet

  28. Noelle Reese May 3, 2010 at 9:50 am #

I print every single card sketch and layout sketch I come across. I LOVE them! I’ll have to pick up Paper Crafts too! Thanks for the chance to win!

  29. Pam Hodges May 3, 2010 at 9:56 am #

I use some sketches but I usually change them around. I love to get Paper Crafts magazine to give me ideas.

  30. scrappynana May 3, 2010 at 10:00 am #

I use sketches for my scrapbook pages and LOVE them. Now that I know they have sketches for cards, I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of that book!

  31. Christi May 3, 2010 at 10:04 am #

I use sketches a lot for cards. Especially when I want to make a big batch for a gift set. With a sketch the cards can have a cohesive design and I just mix up the colors, sentiments and embellies. It’s a big time saver for me.

  32. Vesta May 3, 2010 at 10:26 am #

I use sketches for everything. Just like I use a receipe when I cook, I use a sketch for scrapbook pages and cards. I’m always on the look-out for good sketches so I can’t wait to get my hands on “PaperCrafts Go To Sketches”!

  33. JillT May 3, 2010 at 10:33 am #

I’m not a big user of sketches for cards or pages. I’m more of the lifting type which is kind of like using a sketch (in my opinion) It’s one of my goals to try these more after seeing a friend use them a lot.

  34. Linda Wilson May 3, 2010 at 10:34 am #

I had to buy this book as soon as it came out because I love using sketches and have already made a few from this book. Thanks for the chance to win!

  35. Christina May 3, 2010 at 10:45 am #

I’ve been pouring back through my little boy’s life, getting his graduation albums, and cards, etc. ready for June. Those stamps would be perfect for the baby pages, which I can’t quite handle yet. Sniff, sniff….they grow so fast.

  36. Miwa May 3, 2010 at 10:55 am #

Cute stamps! And I’ve got to get myself a copy of that sketch book – I *love* using sketches. I don’t have a lot of time to scrap, so they save me a lot of time!

  37. Julia May 3, 2010 at 11:00 am #

I have used sketches a lot for scrapbook pages, but much for cards. I am sure it would speed up the process of cardmaking. I am making more cards lately.

  38. Christine Ousley May 3, 2010 at 11:04 am #

I love sketches. I use them as a springboard. Sometimes my cards look more like the sketch and other times just a little. I think they are great when you need some inspiration.
    xoxo, Christine

  39. Mel May 3, 2010 at 11:21 am #

I love Paper Crafts magazine. I had a few issues and really liked the cards, but couldn’t find the products listed, so I took an old sketch book and “copied” the card ideas by making my own sketches. I used the stuff I already had to make cards using the ideas from the sketches I made.

  40. gwen May 3, 2010 at 11:50 am #

Not to make a card, just scrapbook pages.

  41. Tona May 3, 2010 at 12:02 pm #

I have used sketches for cards before. It’s surprizing the different looks you can get from the same sketch.

  42. Alicia May 3, 2010 at 12:26 pm #

I LOVE making cards with sketches… as a matter of fact I have one in this FAB-U-LOUS publication!

  43. Mary Schmidt May 3, 2010 at 12:43 pm #

I guess that I follow sketches. I usually scraplift when I make cards. I scraplift the layout more that just copy the exact card.

  44. LouAnn May 3, 2010 at 2:33 pm #

I love looking at sketches when making cards. I get so many good ideas that way, and it is easier to just jump right in and make the card whan I have a great idea in front of me.

  45. SondraMyers May 3, 2010 at 2:34 pm #

I have not used sketches for cards. What a great idea!! Thanks!! And thank you for a chance to win this great tool!

  46. glee stormont May 3, 2010 at 5:18 pm #

Never tried it, but i keep wanting to…

  47. karenz May 3, 2010 at 6:48 pm #

I LOVE to sketch on cards! dress em up or down- colors, classy or real “sketchy”, have gotten out of the habit but looking to start again now

  48. Jennie May 3, 2010 at 7:25 pm #

I haven’t tried using sketches yet but the magazine sounds so good, I’ll be picking up a copy this week. Thanks for the heads up.

  49. Virginia Chapman May 3, 2010 at 8:02 pm #

Sketch? Are you kidding? I’m doing good to plan what I’m going to wear!

  50. Tania May 3, 2010 at 9:40 pm #

I love sketches. When I first discovered them it was as a scrapbooker. I didn’t quite ‘get’ card sketches at first, but now they are something I use regularly! Makes the process so much faster!!!
