The Craft & Hobby Association announced yesterday the locations for its Winter 2011 and Winter 2012 trade shows.
The CHA Winter 2011 Show will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center, from Saturday, January 29th through Tuesday, February 1st, 2011. This is a shift from the usual Sunday-Wednesday schedule for the trade show. The California Gift Show will take place at the Convention Center from January 21st-24th, 2011.
The CHA Winter 2012 Show will return to the Anaheim Convention Center from Sunday, January 29th through Wednesday, February 1st, 2012.
“As one of Trade Show Weeks Largest 200 events in North America CHA is faced with some unique exhibiting requirements that can only be serviced in top-tier trade show cities like Anaheim and Los Angeles,” explained Steve Berger, President and CEO, CHA. “Over the past several years CHA has aggressively pursued the best rates, accommodations and concessions from potential host cities in order to keep costs down, grow the show and industry, and keep our members happy.”
In an exclusive interview this afternoon Tony Lee, CHA VP of Meetings & Expositions, told Scrapbook Update Editor Nancy Nally that CHA plans tenatively to start moving the Winter show around from its recent base in Anaheim about one out of every three years to keep the show from getting stale. Lee said that CHA believes it is important to keep the show on the west coast for the next few years due to the concentration of CHA membership in that area (CHA has 800 members in California alone). The size of the venue that CHA needs limits CHA’s selection on the west coast to San Diego, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Anaheim and Los Angeles.
Asked about whether the Saturday-Tuesday schedule for the 2011 show ruled out a consumer Supershow accompanying that show, Lee said that CHA was waiting to see the results of this weekend’s show before deciding on its options for next winter’s show, which could include booking a separate venue for a Supershow. Lee said that logistical concerns with other events in the LA Convention Center had required the schedule shift, but that exhibiting costs and other practical considerations might actually make a separate venue more attractive for a Supershow anyway.
Lee did have a very positive outlook on the future of the Supershows, saying that they are intended by CHA to grow the crafting market and that their research showed they succeeded with that in Orlando. 65% of Orlando attendees said they tried a new craft, and 85% of those who did said they planned on purchasing supplies for a new craft that they tried. Lee said that they have filled the upcoming show’s booth space almost to capacity, and that two-thirds to three-quarters of the exhibitors are doing make-n-takes, taking up about 18,000 square feet with those activitites. He says they’ve also addressed for this show a major concern from the summer show by widening aisles to reduce the congestion that was seen at the summer show.
LA Inc., the Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau, will be aggressively promoting the 2011 winter show location to attendees at the 2010 show in Anaheim. They are sponsoring the Keynote presentation and Awards Ceremony featuring Dr. Martha Beck from 7:45 – 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, January 24th. Prior to the Keynote address attendees will be shown a video highlighting sites and hot spots in Los Angeles. During the show itself, LA Inc. can be found in booth # 3688 where Candy Spelling will sign autographs and give away prizes. (Candy Spelling is the widow of legendary TV producer Aaron Spelling and the mother of actress Tori Spelling. Her bestselling book, Stories from Candyland, will be out in paperback March 2nd.) Universal Studios is also providing Shrek and Fiona for photo opportunities.
So, what will downtown Los Angeles have to offer CHA attendees who in recent years have gotten used to having Disneyland on their doorstep? Scrapbook Update called on our friend Georganne Bender to find out. Bender, as half of the retail consultant team Kizer & Bender, has traveled extensively to speak at every major convention center in the country. (Bender is also currently a CHA board member.) She described the LA Convention Center as beautiful, and for entertainment, pointed to the brand new complex within walking distance called LA Live. LA Live includes an assortment of restaurants and theaters, and the Staples Center is also part of the LA Live/Convention Center complex. For those who wish to play tourist, Hollywood and Beverly Hills are 7-10 miles away – an affordable cab ride for a chance to play paparazzi looking for stars, window shop designer stores, see the walk of fame, or catch a glimpse of the famous Hollywood sign. LAX is about twice as close to the LA Convention Center as it is to Anaheim, facilitating more convenient arrivals.
On Monday, January 25th, 2010 from 7:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. in room 204A of the Anaheim Convention Center, CHA members are welcome to attend the CHA Town Hall Meeting, where they can ask questions directly to CHA executives and learn more about the CHA Winter Show venue selection or discuss any CHA-related items.
