Giveaway: Handmade Nation – The Rise of DIY, Art, Craft and Design

Handmade Nation coverThe book Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY, Art, Craft, and Design was created as an accompaniment to a documentary that shared its Handmade Nation title. The paper volume profiles the crafters that were featured in the movie, illustrated liberally with photos of their work.

Handmade Nation chronicles a diversity in crafts that exists far outside the stereotypes of the suburban mom or scarf knitting grandma. In its pages you can see everything from clothespin dolls to sock octopi to latchhooked nudes. There’s a significant punk and counter-culture influence here, and yet it’s based in the traditional roots of the crafts almost all of us grew up with: embroidery, sewing, and crochet.

If you’d like to explore this fascinating handmade nation, you can win a copy signed by Faythe Levine at CHA as the first of Scrapbook Update’s birthday giveaways!

All you have to do to be the lucky winner is leave a comment on this entry before Midnight U.S. eastern time next Sunday night, September 13th. Make sure you include your email address in the line for it on the comment form (for your own protection, don’t put it in the body of the comment, where it will be visible to the public – just in the email line in the form where only I can see it). You will need it to verify your identity if you are the winner. One entry per person and this giveaway is limited to US and Canadian mailing addresses due to postage expense.

I’ve read about the idea this book was based on and it makes all the sense to me once I’m hooked into counter- culture manifestations. And I’d love to get it….of course:) No matter that all is based on the traditional crafting, sewing, embroidery, painting….What really matters and counts is what has been done with the traditional arts and crafts creating over and over new concepts and movements and trends.

  10. Brenda Munson says:

Ever since I was a little girl I have watched my mother, grandmother and great grandma make things. I watched them make quilts, embroider pillow cases, table cloths, crochet, knit, do needle point, crewel, and darn socks. It was a time that money was scarce and they made things because it was what they were taught at a very young age themselves. Anyway I learned at the age of 11 how to crochet and sew using a machine and by hand. Now at the age of 52 I still enjoy many of these different crafts. I love creating and I would love a copy of this book to read. Thank you for all the information you pass along to us.

  11. Georgia says:

I would enjoy seeing that book and reading the history of crafting especially since all of my family is very involved in such diverse ways. Happy Birthday, too!

  12. Cynthia says:

Nothing pleases me more than seeing people young and old returning to crafting and making their own. There are a lot of talented people out there! My mother taught me and my sisters how to knit, crochet, etc. It was a source of entertainment during the years that I was growing up. When I became a divorced mother of two children and needed to work to support us, there wasn’t a lot of time to pursue crafting, although I did when I could. I guess my interest never really died, but was dormant during those years. Now, with more time to explore the opportunities that are out there for stamping, scrapbooking, sewing (to name a few), I am having fun, fun, fun! Thank you for the post about this book. I would love to win it, but if not, I will put it on my wish list for Christmas!

  19. Brenda J says:

If you could hear me now, singing what I sing to all my friends on their birthdays, and they just laugh and laugh (well, some don’t have my wacked out sense of humor so they don’t get the song anymore) at my original version-sung to the Hallelujah Chorus will all its various parts- “Hallelujah, It’s Your Birthday” song. Birthdays ARE meant to be fun afterall.

This book sounds very interesting and I, too, would certainly enjoy welcoming it to my little abode here to read.
Many thanks, Nancy, for all you do in keeping us so well informed. Have a great Birthday Week.

What an awesome book! We are in the process of getting an artist market going to have market days quarterly for the artists. You hit the nail on the head as we want to stay away from the knitted scarfs and pot holders. We are looking for mixed media artists, jewlery, collages etc. What a great inspiration this would be I think I will need to get it.
