One of the big questions left unanswered by the announcement that Memory Makers Magazine is ceasing publication after the Sept/Oct. 2009 issue is what will happen to their unfulfilled subscriptions?
According to an amended statement on the Memory Makers message board, "We are working closely with our circulation department and
fulfillment company and will distribute information regarding your
subscription closer to the publication date of the September/October
final issue."
So what options does the company have?
When CK Media recently shut down its Digital Scrapbooking and Simple Scrapbooks titles, those unfulfilled subscriptions were shifted to its flagship Creating Keepsakes title. Memory Makers doesn't have a sister publication to take over its subscriptions, though. When PaperKuts folded in 2006 without a sister publication to send its subscribers to, Memory Makers stepped in and purchased the remaining subscriptions to increase its own subscriber base. Given the current state of the publishing industry, it's probably unlikely that will happen at this point.
F+W Media does have several options within their own company, though. They own a wide range of non-scrapbooking titles which could be substituted (perhaps with subscribers being offered a choice of titles). And of course there are their book titles, which could also be used as compensation.
But of course, what the subscribers like me really want is what we aren't going to get…the Memory Makers magazine we love.
