Monday News Briefs: Making Memories & CKU, Michaels Executives

It’s Monday…how about some news briefs?

Making Memories & CKU:

Margie Romney-Aslett, Making Memories’ usual CKU instructor, indicated on her blog on March 6th that she had unexpectedly parted ways with Making Memories. This raised questions about whether Making Memories intended to continue with participating in CKU, or whether they were pulling out given the shaky state of CKU’s parent company CK Media at the moment.

According to a statement issued by Making Memories to Scrapbook Update following the announcement by Romney-Aslett, Making Memories will be participating in CKU in 2009 as planned. Their classes will be taught by Gail Pierce-Watne, who has been with the company for over four years and is their design team director.

The 2009 Making Memories CKU class is an album that is created from the Chloe’s Closet line by Making Memories. The line (samples from my personal shopping are pictured below) is exclusive to Michael’s and is just showing up in their stores in the past few weeks.

Michaels and Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club Swap Executives:

According to a New York Times/Reuters story, an interesting executive swap has occurred between Michaels and Walmart.

Wal-Mart said last week that it has hired former Michaels Chief Executive Brian Cornell to be president and CEO of Sam’s Club. And Michael’s has hired as their new CEO to replace Cornell…John Menzer, former Wal-Mart Vice Chairman and Chief Administrative Officer. Menzer has experience in crafts retailing since he was president of Ben Franklin Retail Stores before taking the position with Wal-Mart.
