Fiskars Dropping Production of Consumable Products

Fiskars announced via the Fiskateers blog on Tuesday that after their CHA-Winter introductions they will no longer be introducing any new consumable products such as paper, stickers, and rub-ons. Instead, the company will return to its roots manufacturing durable goods – tools such as scissors, stamps and gardening implements.

The announcement says that the Heidi Grace, Cloud 9, Ink by Steph, Lil Davis, and Kimberly Poloson lines will continue, but that they will only contain non-consumable products in the future.

Why the drastic change in direction? According to the blog announcement, the company wants to get back to what it does best:

Fiskars has taken the time to reflect on the numerous awards and accolades they have received over the years in the area of tool design, and has decided that it’s time to get back to its roots and do the thing that it does best: design and produce innovative, awesome, award-winning crafting and garden tools.

This doesn’t surprise me and I think we’re seeing the end of the scrapbooking world as we have known it. That’s a whole other topic unto itself. But, I’m left confused by Fiskars announcement – I just don’t get how their lines are going to be full of non-consumables – Heidi Grace non-consumables? I don’t get it…

  3. I, for one, certainly hope that we’re not seeing the end of scrapbooking as we know it! I think it’s likely we’ll see a tightening of belts with the scrapbooking industry but this hobby is as old as paper (well maybe not quite that old)and has gone through many different incarnations & trends. As for Fiskars continuing with non-consumables, they do currently use Heidi Grace designs (as well as Cloud 9, L’il Davis, Stephanie Poloson and Ink by Steph) for many non-consumable products such as acrylic stamps, scrapbook albums and, my personal favorite, as special edition scissors where they have the designs on the actual blades of the scissors. I understand that is the idea behind using the designs but in a non-consumable way.
Like you, I will miss the papers and stickers (I am a big Heidi Grace Designs fan) but I working with Fiskars for the past year (and being a Fiskateer for the past 3), I can see where Fiskars is really first and foremost a tool company so I can see where this makes sense for them. You can always chime in on the Fiskateer board if you have suggestions, ideas or comment at http://www.fiskateers.com. This announcement was first shared on our blog over there.

I find that sad as I do really love Heidi Grace and Cloud 9 papers. Better stock up now.
