[Book Review] Scrap Simple: Using Minimal Design To Create Beautiful Scrapbook Pages

This book (Scrap Simple by Hillary Heidelberg) is actually almost a year old, but is incredibly timely right now for many scrapbookers struggling to scrap on a budget.

Scrap Simple: Using Minimal Design to Create Beautiful Scrapbook Pages walks scrapbookers through a progression of adding different layers of design elements to their pages:

  • cardstock only
  • patterned paper
  • embellishments
  • creating two page layouts
  • text as a design element
  • utilizing white space

Scrap Simple is illustrated with the clean and simple work of Hillary Heidelberg and several other designers. If you are a fan of a simple and graphic style, Scrap Simple’s contributors give you plenty of inspiration along with accompanying explanation of the design concept behind the page. I’ve always loved this sort of clean style but struggle to use it. The explanations of the concepts behind the layouts really helps me to understand what it was that worked about the layouts I like in the book so that I can use those concepts myself hopefully in the future.

In a time when many scrapbookers are struggling with being able to maintain their hobby on limited budget, Heidelberg’s book shows very affordable scrapbooking that doesn’t look bare. Most of the pages in the book are limited to cardstock, patterned paper, and a few small embellishments like buttons, brads, rub-ons or a piece of chipboard. The result is extremely affordable scrapbooking, as well as very fast scrapbooking for people short on another precious resource – time.
