Internet Retailer just came out with their 2008 edition of the Internet Retailer Top 500, and several scrapbook industry and industry-related retailers made the list.
Retailers make the list based on their internet sales volume for the previous year. Amazon.com was #1 on the 2007 list. The top 10 also included such retailers as Staples, Office Max, Dell, Apple and NewEgg.
Kaboose, Inc., the parent company of online scrapbook site Two Peas In A Bucket, made the list based on the combined sales of Two Peas and the company’s Birthday In A Box operations. This was the company’s first year making the Top 500 retailers list.
Joann.com, the online arm of Joann’s stores, also made the Top 500 list for 2007.
Not technically part of the crafts industry but with ties to the scrapbooking industry through its licensing arrangements with CK Media, Shutterfly.com was also one of 2007’s Top 500 internet retailers. Several other photo companies – Adorama Camera, B&H Photo, and Ritz Interactive – also were Top 500 retailers in 2007.
The Top 500 list for 2007 shows a growing online market. The sales of the top 500 internet retailers as a group rose by 21% in 2007 from the previous year. Web-only merchants were one of the fastest growing segments, with sales growth over 22%. 44% of the sites in the top 500 are internet-only retailers. 21 online retailers reported sales of over $1 billion in 2007 compared to only 17 billion dollar retailers in 2006.
The full 465 page Internet Retailer report on the 2007 Top 500 retailers is available for $65 through their website.
Based on these numbers, internet retailing is clearly going to continue to be a strong – and growing – factor in the scrapbook market that brick and mortar retailers and manufacturers would be wise not to minimize or ignore.
